Beebee family
« on: Monday 28 April 08 20:25 BST (UK) »

Hi.  I'm tracing the Beebee family who were in Walsall.  I've not been looking at this part of the family for long but have the following information:

Gertrude Holmes Beebee, born March 1888 in Walsall, married William H Mason in June 1916 (in Walsall).  They had a daughter Margaret Beebee Mason who was a land girl during the war.  She was sent to the Pershore/Evesham area and ended up marrying the land owner whom she was working for, Wilfrid Malins.

I have found Gertrude on the 1891 census and she is listed as living at 32 East View, Walsall Foreign (what does the 'foreign' part mean?) with her parents as Samuel Beebee - brown saddler, and his wife Ellen.  I couldn't find her on the 1901 census however the rest of her family were now living at 5 Denmark Rd, Walsall.

I'm trying to see if they are linked to the famous leatherworkers D.Mason and Sons or former mayor, benjamin beebee.

Any info would be greatly received.

The Foreign apparently means "that part of a town that lies outside the parish proper."

Thanks Jacques.  I've had a good read through but it looks like it might be a different Gertrude.  'My' Gertrude would be about 13 years old on the 1901 census (born 1888) and she is definately a 'H' Beebee rather than an A.

It does look as though there would be a family link there though with the similarity in the names.  I might be able to slot them in somewhere soon when I've more to go on.

Thanks again Smiley

Hi both  Smiley

Bit of a long shot but there's a Gertrude Beatie age 13 born Walsall boarding in Sutton Coldfield

I can't see her in 1891 or a birth registration ...

Thanks for trying Jacques, I think I might follow up Tati's lead (thanks Tati - really helpful!) on the basis of a spelling mistake.  Gertrude would be about 13 which would fit with being in school and if I'm not mistaken, the Gertrude Beatie as found on 1901 census is listed as living with two school mistresses.

Also, thanks for the reference number etc DMP for Gertrudes birth.  I do have it but I think I'll go ahead and order certificate so I can find out her mothers maiden name (which I think might be Holmes).

You are all so helpful - thanks again  Smiley

It's on FreeBMD!

He's indexed as Beebes but there's a postem saying it's Beebee. When you don't find what you want on FreeBMD it's useful to use wildcards - I just searched under Beeb*
