1851/1861 Census Look-up Please - POWLES

Looking for the parents and family of Edwin POWLES. Edwin was born c.1847 in Kingsfold
and married in Monmouthshire in 1869.

The 1881 Census shows him as a Mason in Bedwellty, but would like to know his whereabouts in 1851 and 1861.

a different wife for Thomas in 1851 so maybe the wrong one!

www.familysearch.org has these marriages:
Thomas Powles to  Amelia Breaknell 16 Jan 1843 at Kimbolton
    Thomas' father named John, Amelia's father Israel

Thomas Powls to Maria Bennett  19 Feb 1829 at Leominster

and these baptisms all at Kimbolton: 

With parents Thomas Powles and Maria:
Thomas 26 Sep 1833, Henry 11 Dec 1836, James 22 Mar 1839, Charles 19 May 1844, Edwin 26 Jul 1846

with parents Thomas Powles & Amelia:
Edwin 14 Mar 1847, Thomas 15 Aug 1852, John 27 Aug 1854 

so two different families, will look for the others in 1851/61
Both Edwins born within a year of each other!

1841 for both families - you'll need Edwin & Hannah's marriage cert to find father Thomas' occupation, or knowledge of siblings' names to decide which is Edwin's correct family

Well, I've finally received the m/cert. for Edwin POWLES/Hannah EVANS. Edwin's father is shown as a Mason, which puts Edwin in the family with Thomas/Emma as parents. Edwin is also shown as a Mason (he was a Mason's Lab. in 1861).

The only surprise here is that Thomas (the father) is shown as Mason, but in 1851 and 1861 he was an Ag. Lab. So, at the time of Edwin's marriage (1869) Thomas would have been 61 and changed occupations. Not unusual I suppose but having worked on the land for all those years, then to move into a trade would be quite the change!

Glad you think the marriage cert sorted the family out, although in 1871 Thomas is still an Ag. Lab  Undecided  maybe Thomas' occupation on the cert is a mistake? Now you're going to need Edwin's birth cert to be really sure

Edwin's b/cert. shows that his mother was Amelia, formerly Breakwell, and his father was Thomas, a Labourer. So I can now pursue this further.

The other surprise on the b/cert. shows that Edwin was born at 2 a.m.! When I received another b/cert. from a Mon. RO it was explained to me that the time indicates the child was one of twins, triplets, etc. If this is the case, then Edwin's twin must have died at birth because I can't find them for the same period, meaning it wasn't registered. Can there be another reason?

Ring the Register Office where you got the Certificate from and ask if this particular Registrar usually put time of birth as sometimes this was the case in early registrations.

GRO ref for their marriage is Mar 1843 Leominster    26  213
Amelia   BREAKNELL    Thomas POWLES

As you say, there is no birth or death registration for another Powles child the same quarter as Edwin in Leominster, so I would guess if a twin, it was a stillbirth ~ or again, as Puffcat says, stating the time was just that registrar's way of entering births

Thanks for this. Had'nt thought that registrars in the 1840's could have entered the time of birth as well.....

The b/cert for Edwin could put Amelia as being formerly BRACKNELL, could go either way with the handwriting, but did a quick search of all entries in Herefordshire in the 1840's and found 2 with that surname (Amelia being one of them) and well over 100 people with the name BREAKWELL, so it could be transcription error so I think I'll go with the name BRACKWELL.
