Hi Morag and Carole

The croft history of Hoghaigearraidh (Hogharry) is listed in Bill Lawson's book Isle of North Uist, Volume 1.

(google  Co Leis Thu?  for his website.

Here's what's in there (no actual dates of occupation are noted):

7 Hoghaigearraidh (I'll refer to it as Hogharry from now!)

Christina Mary MacDonald (your mother) and husband Alex MacKay from 13 Bhaile Mor

previously occupied by her grandparents:

Alex MacIsaac b. 1871 from 3 Caolas Phalbeil (Kyles Paible) and Mary MacDonald b. 1877/9 from 7 Hoghharry.

Alex and Mary's children were:

Mary (your grandmother), who married Harry MacLean from Tobermory.
Margaret, who married Archie MacPhail from 30 Loch Euphort - they settled in Bunawe.
Kate, who married Donald MacLachlan from Fort William - they settled in Torlundie.

previously occupied by Mary MacDonald b. 1877/9's parents:

Roderick MacDonald 1829-1900 who lived there all his life, and wife Margaret MacDonald 1852-? from 16 Cnoc a Lin.  they had 8 children including your great grandmother Mary. There are details on some of the others if you wish it.

previously occupied by Roderick MacDonald's parents:

Ewen MacDonald 1789-1862 and Marion MacDonald 1793-1876. They had 6 children including your great great grandfather Roderick. More details available on the siblings if you wish.

previously occupied by Marion MacDonald's parents:

Archie MacDonald 1765-c 1845 and Marion MacLean, no dates known.  They had two known daughters, Ann b. 1787 and your 3 x great grandmother Marion.

That's it for 7 Hogharry.   I'll go and have a look now and see if there is anything further on Alex MacIsaac's family from Kyles Paible.

Cheers

Ellen.

Hi again

on Alex MacIsaac's side, it appears from Bill Lawson's book  North Uist in History and Legend  (I really do recommend that you visit his website - the one for his books is  www.billlawson.com/books ) that Caolas Phaibeil was never crofted but left in the occupation of joint tenants, so there is not a croft history on Caolas Phaibeil.

However, it does say in the Hougharry one that his father was Neil, and grandfather Angus.  On the 1881 census he can be found with his family.

Address just showing as North Uist, all born North Uist:

Neil MacIsaac, Head, 50, Crofter
Mary, wife, 51
John, son, 24
Angus, son, 23
Donald, son, 16
Marion, daughter, 14
Alexander, son 10.

A quick check of the IGI gives Alexander's birth as 24 Mar 1872 at North Uist, and his mother's maiden surname as MacDonald.

Think this is enough for you to be getting on with, as half the fun is finding people yourself, but if you want any more help, just shout.

Cheers

Ellen.
