GEDCOM File
« on: Tuesday 29 April 08 12:01 BST (UK) »

I have been sent a Gedcom File of 42.6KB which AOL says it cannot download even after trying and advises me to use another application.

Please, is there anybody who can tell me how to do this?

Thank you

What Family History Application are you going to import it into ?

Downloading is / should be straightforward, dont understand why AOL is commenting on a file you have been sent  ........ unless its trying to find a Family History Program to 'give' the Gedcom to ?

Can you just 'save' the Gedcom from the email, and then launch your FH application, and ask it to process the saved Gedcom file ?

I was going to put the gedcom info into the Tribal Pages Tree maker.
The gedcom came as an attachment which I saved onto My Documents.  When I tried to open the resultant file I was told that this could not be done by AOL.

I will try to see if I can put it into the Tree Maker.

Thank you

I have tried to import the Gedcom I received into the Tribal Pages.  After entering the name with ged at the end and clicking Browse the file name came up in My Documents ready to open  but then I was told that there was no file of that name to be found by Tribal Pages

When the Gedcom was received as an attachment it stated that AOL did not process this type of file so altho the named ged is now in My Documents it cannot be sent presumably because AOL said that it did not process this type of file

how was it named / spelled when still an Attachment to the email ?

when saving it, presumably you didnt change or add to the name, especially the GED suffix ?

when pointing TP at it (Browse window) you didnt inadvertently add a 2nd suffix of GED ?

The attachment had the sender's  name   after which there was ged and then 42.6KB

I should have added that it was saved with that name ..just as it arrived.... in MY Documents.  When I put that into Tribal pages the file named in My Documnts came up to open ready to send.  I clicked open...just as if I was adding it to an E mail to be sent.  Tribal pages said that it could not find the file.

It seems that altho the gedcom name as been put in My Documents it must not exist as AOL said that it did not process that kind of document.

Go into my documents and locate the file.

If you double click it then theoretically your family history program will launch and open it.

If not, right click it and select Open With and then select your family tree program.

I have done both things.  Double Clicked and then
Open With

Therer was a list of programmes I could use but none worked.  I did as it advised and went to a web page .  I used the  Tribal Pages entering  the name again with no result .

AOL just said that it did not support this file but would try to open it.  It then stated that It was too large for them and to try another application

I think perhaps I may have to ask my nephew if he has sent the correct name altho I cannot see him making a mistake

I have never had an attachment which was too large before this

Do you actually have a family tree program installed on your computer?

If you cannot open a gedcom file using the methods described previously then it probably means you do not.

You can get a free family tree program from Family Search (amongst others) and that will definitely open the file.

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/default.asp

Go to the site and scroll down the yellow column  and select Download PAF.

I do have the Tribal Pages which I use.  Mine has a different name to that of my nephew who is trying to send his Gedcom, also from Tribal pages.

I sent him all the info in the first instance and he said as he had created a Gedcom I could have it or we could  both use the same Tribal Pages address

Perhaps as he has already  got the info entered I could use the same site.  I share a family line with my husband but there is a lot on my husband's maternal side of the family which has not been entered.

The troubel is that I did not have a computer and have been researching for many years and there is so much information to enter.

I will see if my nephew agrees to our sharing his file but I will go into the tree maker you have given and see how things work.

I do appreciate all the advice given and the time it has taken to send it.  Thank you

I did a Family Search PAF tree and that did not take the Gedcom either.  After returning to this problem I reloaded the gedcom attachment, as before, into MY Documents  and went thru the process of entering the gedcom again into the site I have on Tribal Pages and in a few seconds  it was accepted by my tree.

Makes one wonder

Did you download it and install it?  If so it should launch when you double click the .ged file in My Documents.

Anyway, that is largely academic as you got it to upload to Tribal Pages.
