The English adventurer who settled on a tiny Pacific island 145 years ago

There is an item in the paper today that might be of interest to people with a Gloucestershire interest

The English adventurer who settled on a tiny Pacific island 145 years ago ... and left everyone with Gloucestershire accent

Quote
An English adventurer who settled on a tiny Pacific island almost 150 years ago has left a mark that has lasted to this day - everyone now speaks with a Gloucestershire accent.

There may only be a total of 63 residents on Palmerston, one of the Cook islands, but they all share the West Country burr of their ancestor Thomas Marsters.

Mr Marsters, a carpenter to trade, headed to California for the Gold Rush in the 1840s before his wandering spirit took him across the Pacific and eventually arriving on Palmerston.

Quote
From the little information there is about Marsters, it is thought his family roots were in Gloucestershire.

The name Marsters is believed to be a corruption of "Masters" in the West Country dialect.

Mr Roberts has discovered that today Marsters' descendants can be found all over the globe.

According to the Hampshire Telegraph and Sussex Chronicle 30 March 1895  "English King of a Coral Island" - "35 years ago William Marsters left a whaling ship in the Bay of Islands.....and eventually settled on Palmerston Island"

Can't be many of them from that island!

I just saw the newspaper article so thought I would pass on in case of interest to anyone.  I did a quick search and there did not seem to be any other posts with the "Marster" name.

My own Gloucestershire connections are distant, one of my Great Grandfather's brothers (from Bolton) married someone from Churcham, though they moved around and lived mostly in London.  I was able to photograph their grave in Churcham whilst down in Englandshire last month.

Strange that he should give the islanders Gloucestershire accents if he didn't come from there though ...

(This same story has been repeated several times on Radio Gloucestershire - I wonder who researched both versions and whether they have compared notes?)

Kia Orana!
The locals  know their whakapapa (genealogy)  and tell their stories wonderfully.
I have lived in the islands on and off for  40+ years and one thing that you need to come to grips with very quickly is the matter of gender!

It is very diffficult  to be introduced to a 6ft muscular Polynesian male "as this is my niece"  and equally disconcerting to meet a petite female introduced as a nephew! Huh

Apparently this came about when Missionaries arrived, taught the locals to speak English and some nuances of relationships were lost in Translation!

Thus niece and nephew were applied depending on whether the person was descended  from your maternal or paternal side!

An example ; my brother's children would be my nephews regardless of their gender.
My sister's children would be nieces regardless of their gender!

As knowledge has increased this particular difficulty has been largely overcome but one can imagine how it it used to be!

All whakapapa lines are confused as we genealogists know but when different languages and cultures intervene the results can be a nightmare! Little wonder misunderstandings occr between nations.

Compounding this is a population of about 20,000 spread over 15 islands!

Definitely a paradise everyone should visit!  Take a look at this site and drool!

There is so much speculation where William came from so to set the record straight.....
William Marsters came from Walcote in Leicestershire. He was born in 1831 to parents John Masters and Ann Armstrong. He was named Richard and had a brother Joel and a sister Elizabeth.
When William/Richard arrived on Palmerston he named one of the atolls Leicester bank.
He named his first male child Joel after his brother who died aged 12.
I used to correspond with the Rev. Bill Marsters who was William/Richard's gt Grandson who told me of his parents names, from there I found got Joels birth cert and confirmed he had the same parents.
Palmerston looks a beautiful place and one day........
