Not sure if anyone can help here!
Im looking for a year of death for my gt grandfather William Sayers Henry.
He was born in Sunderland 1889. Married in Leicester 1912. Had 2 children and then left the family and was never spoken about again!
He may have stopped in Leicester but I have heard recently that a relation thinks he went back up to the Sunderland area.
I have no idea when he died or where!
So if anyone can find out for me Id be eternally greatful as it would clear up this mystery for good!

Hi Niglor,
I've searched the Durham county council website but they only have deaths after 1912 indexed online 1981-1990 by which time I think he would be too old!

So I think it will mean trawling through the full GRO death indexes either on ancestry or findmypast

born Oct-Nov-Dec 1889
he was 11 and living with his grandma
living at number 11 short street in sunderland in South Bishopwearmouth

have you any further information , do you have his wifes name ?

Yes this is him! Margaret was my grandmother.
Not got an exact date Im afraid to where he was last heard of.
All I know is that he left when my nan was a young girl. George would have been about 3/4 maybe??
Sorry to be so vague. He was never talked about Im afraid. It was always a taboo subject with gt grandmother Florence- he must have really hurt her! I have my own theories on the subject though-she was from a well to do family and he was an orphan whose mother was once living in a poorhouse(1881 census has her listed there). I think he married her and took off with money etc-some other family member said he left them with no money. He was a handsome man - we have some photos of him which were found when my grandmother died-hidden behind another photo in a frame!
Im guessing he may have been dead before 1950's maybe before. My gt grandmother did remarry twice!! She was married to her second husband in the late 40s early 50s I think?? His name was Jock Ellison.
Mums cousin has said (whether this is true I don't know) that her mum went with Florence up to Durham somewhere to sort out someones funeral and that was in the 1950's. This is just hearsay though but could be worth checking?
Thanks for looking things up for me.Be great if you can solve the mystery of when and where he died for me!

It would perhaps help to know if your gt.grandmother was divorced or widowed when she married for the second time. Will you be getting her marriage cert?

Hi Barbara,
Luckily mum has Florence's wedding certificate still - the second one!
She married Jock Ellison on November 16th 1940 and is listed as being a widow.
So this narrows the search down between 1920-1940!
Only thing is I cannot even be certain he did die back in the area he came from as no one really knows! He could have died anywhere in the country! But as he was from SUnderland thought he may have gone back there.

Thank you ever so much for finding this out for me!!!
Ive just phoned mum and told her shes thrilled to finally find out what happened to her grandad. She was suprised to hear he died London but says he was an engineer and his job could have taken him down that way.
This is definately him!
He was born in 1889- I have his birth certificate.
Mum now wants to get the death certificate to find out more what he died of etc.
Ive found out more about him this last 12 months than I expected.

It may not be him though!! He's not in Durham or Leicester, and I haven't finished checking the GRO index 
You need to check details with the GRO ( http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ ) or local register office first, e.g if it states his full name and not just initial S., if he was husband of Florence and what his occupation was. If you order from the GRO they charge £3 to check details, if you can order from the local register office they probably wouldn't charge. Hammersmith & Fulham Register Office is at

Ive emailed GRO to ask if they have the middle name of William.Plus asked if there is a place of birth. Told them I have details but just need to confirm before ordering a certificate.
Mums pretty sure its him as we never knew where he went when he left the family. He could have gone anywhere in England. Durham and Leicester were the only 2 places we were ever able to place him. Hes been a very hard character to find I can tell you! On his marriage certificate he has his father listed as William Henry deceased where his father was actually called Matthew Henry (deceased) Someone from Durham records says he may not have ever known his fathers name-his father died when he was 2. His mother died when he was only about 12 and he also lost both sets of grandparents around the same time!! So by the time he met Florence he was an orphan in every sense of the word!
Im pretty certain that on my nannas marriage certificate it says that her father is deceased. Mums going to double check that tho.
Anyway carry on checking if you want to just incase you come across anything else-but its too much of a coincidence not to be him-right age and he is the only William S Henry I have found born that year 1889.

Have you seen the 1891 census showing William as his father?
