Hi all  Smiley

Wondering if anyone can help me find the following person in the 1841 census?

Thomas Edwards b. 12 july 1812, Marsh Green, Longdon Upon Terne.
Father: Richard
Mother: Sarah
Occupation (1851 onwards) : Gardener
Wife: Ann  b.abt 1818, Besford Wood, Shawbury

In 1851 he is living in Sugden, Rodington

There are 17 Thomas Edwards on the Shropshire 1841 in that age range.  Looking at the 1851 - their eldest child was only 5 so were they married before the 1841 census

The 1841 does not show actual birthplaces and ages from 16yrs were rounded down to the nearest 5 years.

To find your Thomas would mean having to download every image in that age range to check his occupation

Like Carole, I was overfaced with the possibilities but this looks a strong candidate. I based it on searching for Edwards born Marsh Green and found a Daniel in later censuses.

1841 HO107; Piece 905; Book: 7;  Folio: 104; Page: 9

Marsh Green, Township of Ironbridge Civil Parish Ercall Magna


Richard Edwards 66 gardener
Mary 55 yrs
Thos 26 yrs gardener
William 24 yrs carpenter
Daniel 21 yrs bricklayer
James 17 yrs gardener

all born in county

perhaps Richard either married again or mother's name is wrong? Daniel is entered on Family Search with mother Mary. William also has a mother Mary.
The entries for Thomas are based on a submission rather than church records with mother Sarah. The entry which is from church records for Thomas just states father's name.
So it looks as though the younger three chidlren are from the marriage of Richard and Mary.

Hi again Gillian,
I have just been looking over your earlier posts re this family.

There is a record on Family Search for Richard 1810 - parents Richard and Sarah which is an extracted record. Several of the other records are submissions which are not always reliable. I was wondering if I had the right family and then noticed this entry on the same page as previous:

Richard Edwards 30 yrs gardener
Mary 25 yrs
Sarah 5 yrs
Richard 2 yrs
all born in county

further on again there is
John Edwards 35 yrs labourer
Elizabeth 32 yrs
both born in county
don't know if he is related or not (can't spot him on IGI)

You have given me so much information to work on and investigate some more, but I feel sure that this is my Thomas.

I confess I have been guilty of basing several  findings on the submitted entries... Embarrassed Embarrassed  It's hard to resist when they give you the mother and her maiden name and everything  Grin Grin  I've learned my lesson though and from now on will take heed of the experts and not rely too heavily on these entries  Cool

There is often a lot of truth in the submissions- where people have perhaps got the info from research but it is wise to err on the side of caution.
Maybe Richard did marry twice- church records may show this.
