Marriage Knox and Gladstone
« on: Tuesday 29 April 08 13:02 BST (UK) »

Trying to find a marriage between Jane Knox b.c. 1828 and Alexander Gladstone b.c.1826. both of Spittal Berwick on Tweed . In the 1861 and 1871 census Alexander is listed as an able seaman. Jane is living with her children in Spittal. There first child was born about 1855.
Thanks in anticipation

I was given the name Knox by a fellow researcher, but she did not have a marriage date. The Jane and Alexander I am looking for is the one that has a daughter Euphemia b  1866 in Berwick.( Spittal ) I am sure the Jane is not Dixon
Thanks Heather

Both the 1851 and 1861 census have Jane living with her daughter Ann bc1853. This is likely to be the Ann Gladston registered in Jun 1852 in Berwick, considerably before 1855, the date you give as the birth of their first child. Was this Alexander's child from a previous marriage?

There is a Jane Knox b Spittal on the 1851 census but no evidence that she married Alexander. Indeed, as Tati says, the evidence is pointing to Jane Dixon.

Is there any chance that the other researcher saw a Jane b Spittal on the census and assumed it was the right Jane? You seem very sure of the Knox, so presumably have evidence from elsewhere.

Hi

I suspect that the Jane Knox shown in 1851 at Berwick HO107/2421 Folio 267 Page 48 is the prime candidate in view of the christian names used in that family and subsequently in the relevant Gladstone family (such as Euphemia, Adam and Ann). This Jane is not with her parents in 1861 nor does she seem to be in service anywhere else.

If the Gladstones' daughter Ann was born in 1853 (and named Gladstone) it would suggest that the 1854 marriage is a bit late. Whereas the Jane Dixon & Alexander Gladstone marriage in 1854 seems to suit the family shown in 1861 at Morpeth RG9/3873 Folio 71 Page 32. I think this is probably the Jane Dixon to which Heather referred (born and married in Tynemouth).

I had tried Scotlandspeople for marriages 1851-4 and found nothing.
I agree with DS that the Jane Knox he lists is a strong candidate; I had seen the father called Adam but hadn't seen the mother-in-law called Euphemia on the next page.

I have just found them in 1881,although I expect you have that?

Was rather hoping her mum might have moved in with them  Roll Eyes

Many thanks for all the help. I have  since found out that Alexander Gladstone B 1833 was the Alexander who married Jane Dixon in Tynmouth 1854. He was the son of James Gladstone b 1783 and Mary Robinson b.1788.   I have a child Alexander b. c 1852 listed as the first born for the Alexander and Jane (knox) but still no marriage. I will keep on looking

Sorry folks have got a bit muddled ( blame the age) Alexander b. 1833  who married Jane Dixon was the son of John Gladstone b.1 1811 who married Phyllis Richardson .  John was the brother of Alexander b. 1826 to James Gladstone and Mary Robinson.
Will quit while I'm ahead
Thanks Heather
