I have recently found the christening of JOSEPH KAY 1821 Christchurch Tynemouth.
JOSEPH was my gt.gt.grandfather.
His father was noted on the entry in the parish register as JOHN KAY glassmaker. They lived in Walker[s] Place.
Where would John have worked? He was noted as a White Glassmaker on the entry for Elizabeth's christening in 1823, at the same address.
Joseph married Ann Bremner 1839 in Edinburgh.They had 6 children, 2 in Burslem, Staffs., 2 in Edinburgh and 2 in Manchester.
Joseph, Ann and brother John Kay were in the 1841 census with other Kays I have not been able to identify. [See other posts in Midlothian, Scotland.]In that census Joseph's birthplace was England.In the 1851 census Newcastle upon Tyne and then in '61,'71, and '81 his birthplace was Edinburgh.
He died in the Edinburgh Workhouse in 1883 as pauper, formerly glassmaker.

Hi Kooky,
The northeast of England had a big glass-making industry in the 19th century, I couldn't say exactly where Joseph would have worked, but you can 'google' northumberland glass and see what comes up. There's this site:

Recently found baptism of Joseph's brother John at All Saints Newcastle, Dec.5th 1818.
'Abode' was 'Glasshouse Bridge.
I have found Glasshouse Street in an old 'A to Z'. It goes up from the river [Tyne] past Bottlehouse St. and St. Peters to what is now Walker Road. The area has lots of 'works', presumably glassmaking works?
Is Glasshouse bridge still there?

Glasshouse Bridge still spans the Ouseburn, but the other streets were some distance away and have been replaced by the new expensive waterfront development of St Peter's Basin.
The glasshouses used sand and flint brought in as collier ship's ballast and had a ready supply of coal passing down the river by keel boat. Lead was transported for marketing to Tyneside from the Pennine fields. For some reason Scots immigrants were particularly numerous among the glassworkers.

Peter, thanks for your input.
I have been investigating Glasshouse Bridge and the present one is a replacement for the one mentioned in 1818.
I am now wondering if John and Joseph went to Edinburgh because their father John was from there?

There were glasshouses in the 18th century at Chirton, part of Tynemouth parish, but how long they lasted I am not sure since the Henzell family who owned them went bankrupt. There were bottle houses at Seaton Sluice north of Tynemouth but they would be in Earsdon chapelry.
The glasshouses closest to Glasshouse Bridge were the High Glasshouses belonging to the Newcastle Broad and Crown Glass Co with Sir Matthew White Ridley Bt MP as its principal shareholder.
There is an original glasshouse cone still in existance at Lemington upstream from Newcastle, on a site making scientific glassware.
