Golden Alley was at 30 High Street East, next to Gray Street, it was 9 feet wide, and ran through to Coronation Street it apparently got its name because of its rich inhabitants, like Silver Street and Fitters Row, it once housed the 'elite' of the town, but became a slum in the 19th century.
Go to http://aesica.dur.ac.uk/pip/singlezoom.asp?img=p1666&ref1=1813 if you zoom in Golden Alley is the seventh street west of the area marked 'Intended Market'

From "Tough Times and Grisly Crimes" by Nigel Green ISBN 0-9551635-0-1
The 'Nightside of Sunderland' was published in 1876, and revealed the sordid world of "Golden Alley". One quote; "I had heard a good deal of the evil reputation of Golden Alley and suspicious-looking customers dodging warily about the lane in the shadows added to my fear"

Church Street Market Open is probably an short alley off Church Street (East) through to the Old Market. It is not listed in the Lanes, Alleys of Old Sunderland.

Stan
Thanks so much for the street information. Opens the mind to interesting thoughts. The Kitchen family was living in Golden Alley when father went to gaol for ' not providing for them'!

Maps are great !
Now I would like to read the books you reference. never ends does it!!

Hi Dorothy,
Thanks for the 1871 reference.
Church Street Market Open is between 28 and 29 Church Street. Number 29 is a Public House, the Orlando Hotel. I have marked the location of Market Open with a red arrow on the map at

Hi Stan,
Hope you and Dorothy don't mind me "Jumping In" and asking a question about the streets in Sunderland, I've read your post with great interest Stan and wondered if you have come across on that AOL Hometown map of yours a place called Wilson Street, it's location I believe is on Monkwearmouth Shore.
I've tried to find maps myself without success, I had Ancestors living there in 1891 and 1901.
Appreciate your help

Hi Johnna J

It is actually Wilson Street North and is still there, although the houses were demolished in the 1960s. If you go to
http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/interMAP/viewer.htm
and do a search on the post code SR5 1BB you will see it. It was Wilson Street originally but there is another Wilson Street in Millfield Sunderland so it was named Wilson Street North.
