Name in a will i can't decipher!!!
« on: Monday 17 January 05 13:54 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

I have a will from 1848 that i'm trying to make sense of and on one line it says:

entitled upon the death of my mother to a legacy or sum of five hundred pounds under the will of my late aunt Elizabeth Thomas _____ .

I can't make this bit of the name out and without it i can't find the relevant will to see how Elizabeth Thomas (--?--) is related.

Anybody fancy a go?

Problem is i can't work out how to cut the line from its original .pdf file to paste here, so would have to send the whole file.

How does the narrative carry on? Are you sure her name isnt just Elizabeth Thomas and the unknown word is just 'Now....' or something else irrelevant?

Just a thought.

Immediately after the name it says:

I hereby give and bequeath

So i'm fairly sure that its part of a name BUT i will certainly now try finding a will of an Elizabeth Thomas who died at the right time!!

hi bean,

if you are sure that it is part of her name, then what about Trow? even though the first letter does look like a capital N.

sorry the best I could come up with.

That's what i thought it was but the only Elizabeth Rows that come up on the documents online site for wills are spinsters and i have no link at all to any Rows in my tree. However they are in the right period 1824 to 1848. The Elizabeth in question is referred to in the will as, my late aunt, so i was assuming that she was married to a family member or the sister of someone who was married to a family member.

Have now tried Frow, Trow and Row with no joy barring the 2 Rows mentioned earlier.
Are all pre 1858 wills on this site - documents online, part of the national archives website?

How about - How?
It's a name I've come across in Essex but I'm not an expert in old manuscript.

Hi Bean,

In my opinion, the word is "Now".  I have compared it with several wills that I have here.

It is not a "T" - look at how Thomas is written.  "H" is a larger letter than that, as is "R."

Look at other words in the will for clues as to how the letters are written, especially those that you know what they say.  Names are always the most difficult to decipher, because you don't know what they say with any certainty, especially if the spelling is inconsistent.

Another thing that I have observed from transcribing wills is that the clerk used very little punctuation.  So the sentence, such as it is, could end after "Elizabeth Thomas" and the next one begin "Now I hereby......"  This would be entirely consistent.

So I'm going with just plain Elizabeth Thomas and a new sentence beginning "Now..."

This is a capital 'R' later in the will - it was this taht was leading me towards Row. There are lots of Elizabeth Thomas wills in the right period and 1 is in Herefordshire near to where Esther was so it may be the one.
A bit more digging required before i pay my hard-earned over though.

Thank you to everyone who has helped out and if there are any more suggestions - don't be shy!!

Hi Bean,
It may help if you could see more of the document to compare the letters. It looks like it could be NOW, or Row.
Have you compared the letters with the rest of the document?
If you need to e mail me a partial copy and I will look it over.
