Does anyone know whether the Police Station in Potter Street is still standing? In 1881 it was at 32 Potter St but by 1891 the address is given as 34/36 Potter Street.
Thanks

Thank-you Flo,

Now I know it is definately there I shall add it to the list of places to visit when I get to the East Midlands. My gg grandfather was the Superintendent there for about 20 years.

Best wishes

Hello Brie,
I forgot to mention that the present Police Station is a relatively new building but further along Potter Street is the magistrates court..this may be more relevant for you as i believe this was the site of the original station.... Smiley

Thanks again Flo.

I am sure you will be right. I looked at the 1891 census and my gg gdpa was in 36 and 34 Potter Street with his family, 32 housed a Police Officer and his family whilst number 30 housed a chimney cleaner, his family and an apprentice. I think there must have been some re-numbering since then.

Also town police stations and courts were frequently in the same building; Loughborough, Barrow-in-Furness & Spalding spring to mind.

Thanks
