You could look here for burials:

You could also try searching on the following sites using a variation of spelling (the exact spelling found no matches on either site).

Hi Rebecca   .... and Welcome to RootsChat      Smiley

[Firstly, 3 cheers to Bren for digging up that information - and who was just one step ahead of me].    Grin

Mmmm ... the only reference I was able to find for this rather unusual surname, was the marriage of "a Mary DIGEDAN" (1877).

I am presuming that your Mary Ellen and Patrick, were a married couple ?     Based on that, I wondered if the Mary DIGEDAN who married Adam CHALMERS at Lyttelton, Canterbury, on 22 August 1877 - might indeed be the widow of Patrick DIGEDAN  Huh

A Christchurch cemetery search didn't show a burial for Patrick, nor was there a record for him at Archives NZ.
It may be worth trying to locate a burial record at the Lyttelton cemeteries.   Unfortunately they are not yet online, but if you go the the following website you'll see an email link for the "Cemeteries Administrator".

http://www.ccc.govt.nz/parks/cemeteries

I've also managed to find the "Mary DIGEDAN and husband Adam CHALMERS" buried together at Temuka Cemetery.
This Mary died aged 73 on 16 March 1931 (so born abt. 1858).   Perhaps this approx. date of birth may match up with "your Mary Ellen" ?
[If this Mary CHALMERS proves to be who you are looking for, then further information may be available on any children of this marriage, as Archives NZ (Christchurch) hold a probate record (& will) for her husband Adam CHALMERS who died in 1937].    [Ref:   CHALMERS - Adam - farmer of Rangitata - 1937 - ex Court at Timaru]:

Hope this isn't too confusing ... do yell out if you need further help or explanations.

Lu

P.S.    Looks like I'm a bit "slow off the mark" today ?    Roll Eyes

Guess you have it all sorted out now Rebecca   Huh     Grin

Hi Lucy thanks for the help also

Mary Digedan did marry Adam Chalmers in 1877 (the same church i married in ) some 130 years later Adam's grandparents are buried in Lyttelton and his parents are buried in Rangitata will check out the will though just seems her family disappeared
Ellen Digedan nee Hayes is buried in Linwood cemetery with no headstone and was last at a rest home in woolston i recently got Mary Chalmers nee digedan's death transcript with her parents Ellen (nee Hayes) and Patrick Digedan i found an article at the library stating Mary was the daughter of mr Digedan so assumed he must have to come to New Zealand, was beginning to think the girls came by themselves but have not been able to find him alive or burried so am pulling my hair out at to what is the best thing to do next through other branches of my family i didn't have to try hard for things and information to all bar fall into my lap but this branch is becoming an obsession but am not sure where to go to next
