Do you think Ellen could be Nellie, if so she may be JOhn Chances wife, fits with some burials at Wellington
John 1909 and Ellen 1929
http://www.wellington.govt.nz/services/cemeteries/search/search.php

Sould have checked entry first, yes James parents are JOhn and Ellen
James is James Olando Chance, other siblings Esther Olive d 1937 and Ada May d 1971

My ISP has been down, (GGGRR) so I have been checking all my information. Mary was in NSW for 52 years. She was born in NZ. I also discovered the Ellen and Nellie thing and this James is my James grandson. On the sheet sent to me (via another chatter)  from  NZDF Personnel Archives I failed to notice its from NZ not UK Army. I had located the younger one dying overseas.
Family information says Mary Chance and husband Andrew Robertson arrived in Adelaide in 1869, and 1 son was born there. To date I have found no support of this.
So...with lots of help, I have resorted my information.
I have to get the Archives to do a search. I have the information from them via e-mail. So this will be my next step. The letter does state that they do have information on James and Andrew's
Army careers. (Didn't realise my notes were such a mess.)
Again thank you all very much for your help. I have managed to find out a bit more.

Hope I haven't totally confused anyone again. Undecided

Cheers

O.K.   .... so I take it that the death cert. shows only that  Mary spent - 5 years in Tasmania .... and 52 years in NSW ??

And that there is no mention of NZ other than that she was supposedly born there ?

What was Mary's date of death and age at death ?

Hi Freckle

I now have some information for James CHANCE (from the H. Hughes book).   This is from the same index listing which the other Rootschatter gave you;  however to interpret the index reference, you need to refer to a couple of "keys" which are published at the end of the book.   So the following is the "interpreted" version :

65TH  REGIMENT

A.     Regimental Number  -   1296

B.     Rank (at discharge)  -  Private

C.     Surname -  CHANCE

D.     Christian Name/s  -  James

E.     Birthplace  -  Kells, Meath

F.     Trade or occupation on enlistment  -  Labourer

G.     Date of Enlistment -   2 April 1838   (020438)   (refers to soldier's entry into the army, not necessarily to the regiment in which they served in NZ).

H.    Place of Discharge  -  Wellington (NZ)

I.     Date of Discharge  -  1 June 1859   (010659)

J.     P = discharged to Pension

K.    Ship  -   (RP)  =  "Sir Robert Peel"
Sailed from Gravesend (UK) on or about 15/9/1846
Arrived at Auckland (NZ) on or about 4/1/1847  :
                                   -------------------

If you do a "google" search for "65th Regiment in NZ"  you'll find there is quite a lot of other helpful info available.

Further details of the Regiment in NZ are available on microfilm
and (as they form part of a joint copying venture),  will be available at major repositories in Australia.

Lu

PS   More info to follow in separate post.

Thanks Lu, I couldn't read my copy very well..old age. I was sent the page with the letter meanings too.  Again couldn't read it very well. The chatter who sent it said the librarian copied it and had  checked it against the original. I didn;t want to pester her about it, Cause she went and got it for me.
I will sit with baited breathe to read what little gems you come up with.
Thanks heaps

Cheers

Hi

Yes, that record gives you a lot of valuable info especially for tracing James further.

So James came directly to NZ - which means you can rule out Mary being in Tasmania whilst she was young.   (Perhaps her husband's 14th regiment was posted there at some stage?)    It seems that part of the 65th were in Tasmania but these would have been soldiers arriving on other vessels, escorting convicts.

The fact that James first arrived in Auckand, makes me wonder if there may be a baptism record for Mary, in that area ?   (Yes I know the death cert says "born Wellington" but it must be remembered that this information has been supplied by an informant).   Were the  CHANCE's a Catholic family ?

(I'll post the other info later).

This looks to be the marriage of John and "Nellie" /Ellen.

>  John CHANCE
     Eleanor CHALIS
     Year - 1877    [Folio # 2431]

[Eleanor / Ellen / Nellie  .... all much the same, diminutives of each other].

According to the burial info for John, he appears to have been born in 1853.

Hi Freckle

Mmm ...  probably of no significance - seems that Julia CHANCE's marriage to MOXHAM, took place at St. Marks, Wellington ... which is C of E.

What I'm finding frustrating, is not being able to locate burial places for James CHANCE and son Richard.   I've looked high and low.    The Mount Street Cemetery (Catholic) had some 800 burials - they don't seem to be there either.

Lu,
I think I went through every burial site on line looking for any of them, regardless of religion. I found John and Ellen. May have to wait for a death cert from NZ. Will it tell me where he is buried? Oz ones do. It seems there was a measles epidemic in Chatham and all married men, wives and children were sent on the "Sir John Peel" to protect the regiment. The rest of them came on the "Java" a bit earlier.But...the Java left from Sydney if I read it right.
The 14th regiment 2nd battalion went to NZ in 1858. Have a bit more info.

Cheers

       Year - 1864    [Folio # 0615]

And  ...  from St. Mary of the Angels (Wellington) Baptisms -

>     James George QUINLAN - bapt.  17 Sept. 1865
Parents - James and Eliza - 14th Regiment

Also ...

>     Thomas Francis QUINLIVAN - bapt. 19 June 1880
Parents - James QUINLIVAN adn Eliza CHANCE
