When looking at an  entry on the disc, does it give any other details besides name and year?  eg. parents?

Thanks

Hi Freckle

Unfortunately we don't have a disc (CD) that covers all BDM, as such.      [The NZSG produces (as separate CD's) the Marriage Index, a burial locator, and a number of others - details at their website].

Birth and Death (and Marriage also) are on microfiche (available at major libraries etc.)   .... but to answer your question .... no, parents names are not included on BDM indexes.

eg   Birth Index will show -

Year      Name of Child       Folio Number *

* Having the folio number for the relevant year of birth, allows you search a paper-based resource (District Keys), and locate the district in which the birth was registered.
From about 1980 ? (whoops, may have that date wrong), the fiche record includes the registration district as well.

Poor little New Zealand ... 'fraid that's about as good as it gets for us.    Sad

Lu

PS:   If you're wanting a search done for anything, anyone, - it's still worth posting a query to this board .... you may just have some luck.

NOTE:   The remaining posts to this thread, do not relate to the "BDM disc NZ" query :

Well, the brickwall is the whole family. lol I have found NZ baptisms for Richard 1855, Julia 1857, James 1860 and William Laurence 1863. Father James Chance 65th regiment, mother Elizabeth.
I have a ggrandmother Mary Chance c 1847 Wellington, who married Andrew Robertson 14th regiment in 1864 in NZ. On Marys NSW death cert. is says father James- a soldier , mother -Fitzsimmons. Marys Permission to Marry  only gives father James. Found him (with lots of help from chatters) he was born Kells Meath Ireland. When James snr enlisted he had his mother Nellie as NOK, she lived in Newtown Wellington. I have found a Julia Chance marrying John Moxham in 1882. I have sent  letters to the few people researching Julia, but have had no replies.
Marys death cert. also states she spent 5 years in Tasmania, but I can find nothing there either.
I did find James Chance -a founder of Wellington Tce in the business directory 1886/87 and John Chance-a  labourer.
Once they hit the Shoalhaven area in NSW about 1869 they are well documented.
The 65th reg. did spend time in Tassie, that could explain the gap between Mary and the next child.
I have checked passenger lists in and out of NZ , but they are rather vague details.
That, I'm sad to say, is all I know about that side of the family. Cry
I did find a death in NSW of James Chance ,father James , mother not noted ,in 1884. As well as a few other possibles.
Another chatter checked with NZ Genealogical Society and there was ony one James Chance listed during the Land Wars.
I did also find John Chance buried Karori Cemetery 27 Feb 1909 age 56 gives him c 1853.
So...I haven't been lax, am only a newbie at 20 months, so, just not sure where to go from here, without wasting $$$ and being nowhere further ahead.
Hope I haven't totally confused anyone. Embarrassed I'm really good at that.
Any assistance greatly appreciated and most welcome. Smiley

Cheers

Hi Freckle

Trying hard to "untangle" your CHANCE family for you,  so just a few questions.

1)    James CHANCE (snr.)  born Ireland :     Do you have (a)  an approx. d.o.b.  ?

2)    On the "record" which shows James CHANCE, born Kells     Meath, IRE .... are his parents names given ?

3)    "When James snr enlisted"  .....  do you have "army papers" or some other info re: his enlistment ?

4)     Where did James snr enlist ?

Lu

Hi Lu,

I have only the information I have mentioned. I'd give him c1820. I will send for the enlistment papers as soon as possible.
I can probably get the answers I need when the they get here. I am not a patient woman, I hate waiting for documents to arrive. Roll Eyes
Thank you very much for your help.
The link Althea gave me is great, I did find a missing Australian great uncle, he married his cousin Hilda Moxham.
Thank you both for taking time to help me.

Cheers

Discharged in New Zealand: Soldiers of the Imperial Foot Regiments who took their discharge in New Zealand, 1840-1870 by H Hughes

James Chance is meant to mentioned on page 75..I don't know how much info is given

Althea,
I did try and find Hugh Hughes book. No luck so far. A chatter did get a photocopy of the page for me. That is where I got Kells Meath from. Not much else though.

Now I'm really lost

The James that enlists and had mother as Nellie is for WWI
http://muse.aucklandmuseum.com/databases/cenotaph/RecordDetail.aspx?SearchID=768604&Ordinal=3&OriginalID=2488
He died in Belgium 1917

So this is several generations below the James from Ireland

Hmmm ...  Althea

- hence the reason for asking some further questions.

Lots of little "oddities" to be sorted from amongst the info gathered to date.

I'm sure we'll get to the bottom of it though.    Smiley
