Hi Tracy
Do you know what religion your grandfather was? There is a James Collins buried in the Drayton and Toowoomba cemetery which could possibly be him - this person is in the Roman Catholic section, buried in 1980 at the age of 67.
If you think this is possible, I can investigate the burial for you.

Hi Tracy
That James Collins would have been the right age to have arrived here as a child. Next time I have a spare minute, I will go to the cemetery and search out the grave. If there is a headstone, I will photograph it. It may not tell us whether this is your grandfather, of course!
Were his wife, or any of his children, Roman Catholic? That could be a clue, if so. (If not, of course it doesn't prove anything! )

OK Tracy!
Keep your fingers crossed. I'll have a look in the cemetery as soon as I can!

Hello Tracey
You might like to have a look at www.caara.org.au/Publications/child_migrants.htm
Go to "Accessing Queensland Records" then scroll down to "Records on child migrants held by Queensland Archives". You will find that they have -
* Correspondence from the general system respecting immigration of lads as farm learners, sponsored by the Church Army 14.1.1911 -- 20.4.1923. Ref. QSA PRE/110.
* Correspondence regarding immigration of lads as farm learners 5.5.1922 -- 17.8.1932. Ref. QSA PRE111-113.
* Other correspondence re "unsuitable lads", "adverse reports", "deaths, accidents", etc. Have a look at the list yourself.
If you go back up the article, you will find address for Queensland Archives. You could write and ask them how to access the material from o/seas. They may give you some names of researchers. If you are lucky, a Rootschatter may be going there in the near future and may offer to look up your James Collins for you.
I wish you luck, but at least you know there ARE records!
Diana

If your grandmother was a Roman Catholic there was a good chance that your grandfather had to convert for them to get married. He was probably an Anglican at the time that he emigrated as the Church Army was Anglican.
I would also have expected your parent who was their child to have been brought up initially as a Roman Catholic.

Hi Tracy
Nothing much for you, I'm afraid. The James Collins who could be yours is buried in the RC lawn section of the cemetery, where there are only small and simple plaques. No more info than I've already told you.
If you know that he had a brother Cornelius, however, this could be your man. There is a Cornelius Collins buried beside him who looks like a brother...
