Help- Child Emigration Scheme Queensland
« on: Wednesday 30 April 08 05:33 BST (UK) »

Can any one help please.
I am looking for information on the The Church Army Emigration "Lads Ladder Scheme"
My Grandfather was Trained at Hempstead Hall Training Farm - Essex, which was run by the Church Army.
He was brought out to Australia Queensland Toowoomba around 1925. His name was James Collins.
But I can not find any information on the scheme or Hempstead Hall at all, or what he did or where he went when he got here.

Does any body know any thing, or how I would get the information, please help.

Have sent a email to the Church Army, I am waiting on a reply.

Cheers Tracy

Hi Tracy
Your situation sounds a little familiar.

My grandfather was from Bacup in Lancashire.  In 1929 (when he was aged 14) he came out to Australia on the ship - Bendigo.

When he arrived he was detained (or lodged at an immigration barracks somewhere here in Brisbane) with a group of boys.  They were then sent up to Toowoomba to work on the farms there.

Soon after he moved north to the area around Munduberra.

I have a newspaper clipping from the Courier mail which is a photo of the group of boys who arrived.  Perhaps you should have a look in the newspapers around the time you think he arrived.

unfortunately my pop passed away in 1994 so i have no other info i can share.

Hi Tracy  Smiley

Do you know what religion your grandfather was?  There is a James Collins buried in the Drayton and Toowoomba cemetery which could possibly be him - this person is in the Roman Catholic section, buried in 1980 at the age of 67.

If you think this is possible, I can investigate the burial for you.

Hi Marie,
I don't know what religion he was. It could be him, I don't know when he died. He left the family when my dad was in his teens.
That was 1950 so any time after that.

That would be great if you could do that for me. Thanks so much.

Thanks Tracy

Hi Tracy

That James Collins would have been the right age to have arrived here as a child.  Next time I have a spare minute, I will go to the cemetery and search out the grave.  If there is a headstone, I will photograph it.  It may not tell us whether this is your grandfather, of course!

Were his wife, or any of his children, Roman Catholic?  That could be a clue, if so.  (If not, of course it doesn't prove anything!  Huh )

Hi there,
Thank you so much for all your trouble.
I think my Grandmothers family where Catholic not sure on the Roman Catholic side though. Not sure he was.
My Grandmother died in 1950 her maiden name was Fairbanks. She is buried at Wynnum. But as I said earlier he left the family after that. I think he got married again, not sure.

Thanks again

Hello Tracey

You might like to have a look at www.caara.org.au/Publications/child_migrants.htm

Go to "Accessing Queensland Records" then scroll down to "Records on child migrants held by Queensland Archives".  You will find that they have -

* Correspondence from the general system respecting immigration of lads as farm learners, sponsored by the Church Army 14.1.1911 --  20.4.1923. Ref. QSA PRE/110.

*  Correspondence regarding immigration of lads as farm learners 5.5.1922 -- 17.8.1932. Ref. QSA PRE111-113.

*  Other correspondence re "unsuitable lads", "adverse reports", "deaths, accidents", etc.  Have a look at the list yourself.

If you go back up the article, you will find address for Queensland Archives. You could write and ask them how to access the material from o/seas. They may give you some names of researchers.  If you are lucky, a Rootschatter may be going there in the near future and may offer to look up your James Collins for you.

I wish you luck, but at least you know there ARE records!

If your grandmother was a Roman Catholic there was a good chance that your grandfather had to convert for them to get married.  He was probably an Anglican at the time that he emigrated as the Church Army was Anglican.

I would also have expected your parent who was their child to have been brought up initially as a Roman Catholic.

Hi Diana,
Thanks for the info, I will look into that looks interesting.
I have sent a email to the church army in the UK still waiting for a reply on that.

Hi David,
My Grandparnets where married under the rites of the Salvation Army in Toowoomba in 1933. My Dad was not brought up to be any religion. He said his Uncles were but does not what they were.

Thanks both for your help.

Hi Tracy

Nothing much for you, I'm afraid.  The James Collins who could be yours is buried in the RC lawn section of the cemetery, where there are only small and simple plaques.  No more info than I've already told you.

If you know that he had a brother Cornelius, however, this could be your man.  There is a Cornelius Collins buried beside him who looks like a brother...
