Hi all
I'm chasing the shipping movements of an ancestor, James Thomas (aka Thomas James) SHAW. I have a handwritten copy of his diary made by my grandfather, so it may have transcription errors, but here are the relevant dates:
21 Oct 1824, born Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, England 5 May 1846, left England for USA 13 Jun 1846, arrived New York 29 Jun 1846, arrived Rochester 11 Nov 1848, left Rochester 27 Nov 1848, left New York for England 20 Dec 1848, arrived London, England
If anyone could advise me on which ships he may have sailed, I would appreciate it. I noticed on the castlegarden database that a James SHAW, 22, sailed on Saranak for New York on the correct date, but the arrival for that ship shows as the 19th June, not the 13th as in James's diary - this may be a transcription error.
Cheers Nudge

Hi Nudge I have looked at the shipping records The site has 2 entries for Shaw on the dates you have provided:
One James, born 1824, and one for Thomas b 1822
However, the manifest itself indicates the name to be Thomas, age 24, arriving in Philadelphia (not New York) on board the Saranak 19 June 1846. He is listed as a farmer, from Great Britain, destination United States. I know this is not a lot of help, but may clear up something.

Thanks Valerie
Is it possible that the Saranak stopped at New York and disembarked some passengers on the 13th June, before sailing on to Philadelphia 6 days later?
