Blue Anchor Pub/Nobbs Lane, Portsea
« on: Wednesday 30 April 08 13:24 BST (UK) »

Does anyone know of the Blue Anchor Pub on St Mary's Street and Nobbs Lane off St Thomas Street both in the Portsea area of Portsmouth. My GGGG Grandfather was licenced there in the 1850's but now the whole area has been redeveloped although Nobbs Lane is still there but its all modern housing.
I have managed to get a photograph of Nobbs Lane as it was, very narrow with stark buildings, but I know little about the pub and the surrounding area, any photo's would be good !!

Was the licence a beer house licence or a full licence?

If it was the former, which is very likely at that period, then it may simply have been the front room of one of the houses in the narrow street.  It would also be likely that your ancestor had a second occupation.  A householder could obtain a licence to sell beer for two guineas.

Hi David
It say's on various census's that he's a licenced vitullar - not sure what that is. His son is a brewers agent and his daughter-in-law is down as Inn Keeper. On a 1890's OS map the pub is on there as, Blue Anchor PH.
Cheers

After 1869 when the beerhouse act was repealed many pub owners called themselves licensed victuallers even when they were only licensed to sell beer.

Prior to that date a licensed victualler would have a full licence and be running an inn or tavern.  That is they would have a licence to sell wine and spirits.
