Hirst family Honley
« on: Thursday 01 May 08 06:33 BST (UK) »

Is anyone else researching Hirsts in Honley? In particular I would like to know if anyone knows who the parents of Allen Hirst (b.1821) are. He married Annis b.1827  (nee Jubb in 1850?). They had the following children:
Martha b.1851, Ben Allen b.1857, Thomas b.1861 and Mary b.1866. Like most of the village they were all in the wool trade. They lived in Moor Bottom and Lane Head.

From the Almondbury baptisms as published by Huddersfield & District FHS:

1. Baptised 25.12.1816 Allen Hirst s/o Mark, a clothier & Lydia (nee Bothroyd). Abode is Berry Brow.

2. Baptised 1.7.1821 Allen Hirst s/o Benjamin, a clothier & Martha (no maiden name given). Abode is Honley.

From the date, the abode and the names of Allen's children, I'd say Allen No. 2 is yours.

Two of the HIRST family from Bawtry / Hatfield Woodhouse area did very extensive research into their HIRST connections.

When they died their research was supposed to be carried on by a second cousin and, when complete, lodged with the Borthwick Institute in York, but the cousins were not really interested, so I don't know if their research was deposited or binned!

It would be worth contacting the Borthwick to find out - you might find some answers there.  They didn't confine their research to their immediate family, as they firmly believed that all HIRSTs (with an "I"!) were related.

I was nine years old when I tried to get family tree information out of my Grandfather, so my notes are not great, but according to my notes, the furthest back he could remember (and a group I had not been able to find records for) was Benjamin Hirst married to Martha, with a sister Mary. So I think this is pretty likely.
Thanks - I hadn't known about the IGI records on the internet.

They have a couple of possible contenders, but I need to recruit someone from my family who still lives in England to visit any of the records. I didn't realise such collections existed in the public domain. Thanks
