In 1841 Joseph, 50, was with his family living at Portsea Town, H0107/ 414/7 folio 49 page 11 Mary Ann 40, Elizabeth 15, Agnes 15, William 10, Emiline 10, James 5 and Mary Ann 2.
In his Will, Sept 1854, Joseph left everything to Emiline Stanlake, his daughter. At the time of his Will he was living in Landport. His former Occ. was Sawer at the Dock Yard.
Can anyone see him or Emiline in the 1851 census?

This is a dreadful image but I think it is the family. If you ignore the loop in the J for Jane and the loop from the 'p' in Joseph the second name looks like Embline -the 'ine' is practically lying on the line between the two names

Address is 36 Landport Street
Birth places apart from Joseph are Portsea Hamps
I can't decipher the surnames of the two grandchildren
The entire sheet is a mess!!

Well done, thanks for your help. Joseph was born in Devon. He also worked in the Dock Yard which could be DY on the end of his occupation. Emiline was christened in Dec 1832 so her age is about right. James (not Jane) was born 1835 so his age looks right as well. I have not a clue about their occupations or the names of the Grand children. Mary is the only word I can read. Do you have the record reference H0107........ ? Thanks again.

Ooops, sorry - carried away by excitement
HO107/ 1659 Folio 472 Page 38
Believe it or not this is how I found it
Ewble Stanatoke 1830 Portsea
or
Joseph Stanatoke 1803 Devon
I think that the second granddaughter was entered first as Eliza and then someone made a brave attenpt to change this to Emeline - dunno

I think that James is a Stone Mason's app(rentice) while Emeline is a Dress Maker.
By rights Mary's surname should be Kidd. Mary Ann Stanlake married Henry Kidd. And I think I can see that.
The other one - I'm working on it

Yes, that certainly does look like Kidd - if you screw your eyes up and squint at the same time. Dreadful writing.
Isn't it annoying, though. On the 1861 there is a Mary Ann daughter of William and Mary Ann Kidd, born Portsea but she was born 1853 and is 8 - she should be 13 I am assuming that she is 3 on the 1851 and the 'i is an enumerator's mark but on second thoughts?
Perhaps the first one died - not on FreeBMD, unfortunately

Wrong Kidd family - although I can't find the other one. The father of Mary from the 1851 census, grandaughter of Joseph Stanlake is named Henry. He married Mary Ann Stanlake in 1836 and they had two children: Mary Ann bapt 1839 and Henry in 1844.
I'm having not a lot of success in finding the parents and young Henry in 1851.

Is it possible that Mary Ann Kidd was 13 in 1851. ( Maybe a tad young at 3 to be a 'scholar'!!) The only Mary Ann Kidd I can find in FreeBMD is a birth in Sept 1839 (Portsea). In the 1841 census H0107 414/7 Folio 49 Page 11 Portsea Town a Mary Ann (Stanlake) age 2 was living with Joseph and his family. I believe that 'their' daughter Mary Ann (1815)possibly married Henry Kidd in 1836. Could this be Mary Ann Kidd in '51? Quite what happened to Henry and Mary Ann in 1841 or 1851 is yet to be established.
