family tree programme disc

After 18 years of doing my huge family tree, my computer died and this has left me in a disasterous position.  I have all the information backed up on a CD but I cannot find the programme disc anywhere, thus I am panicking! 
The programme is a very old one and although I have searched  on the internet for a copy I have been unsuccessful.  It is GSP Star, Family Tree 1.5, 1995
Is there another programme that you could recommend that would allow me to download this back onto my new computer? 
I would be most grateful for any help you can offer.  There is a lesson to be learnt here!

Have you tried opening it with something else?  The WDYTYA versions of Family Tree Maker is produced by GSP.

I've got 'The Times FAmily Tree' produced by GSP as well- you can have it.

But try importing to another programme for eg PAF from family search (free)

You say your computer died, but did not provide any details.

If your hard drive still works or if you have not tested to see if it still works then you should try that first.  You may be able to rescue the program from your hard drive.  Because it is an old program it probably did not use the registry but used .ini files instead.  It means that you might be able to migrate the whole program over to your new machine.

If you know someone with an external HDD caddy that plugs into a USB port then you could ask them to have a look at your old hard drive by removing from your old computer and putting it in the HDD caddy.

If you do not know anyone with an external HDD caddy then you can buy them fairly cheaply, like here for example:-

The hard drive hit the dust in the end.  I found a copy of the programme to download free, and hopefully it may be of use to someone else.

Surely the lesson we should all learn from this is to save a back-up copy of a Gedcom of Everyone as well as a Programme backup

I sadly find myself in a similar predicament to Charley, I have lost all my research which was on my Family Tree Maker (free with the Independant). Luckily I had most of the information written down but have come across some gaps which need to be refilled and now can't find the disc which I had.

I have heard you can retrieve stuff from the hard drive with a disc is this true, as you can probably tell I am not a computer buff, if not how can I get all my information back.

Providing that your hard drive is not physically damaged, then yes.

Usually there are 2 major things that can go wrong with a hard drive:

1) The MFT gets corrupted.

There are free data recovery programs available like Testdisk for instance, that will scan your hard drive byte by byte and rebuild the MFT (Master File Table) so that the files are accessible.

2) The boot sector gets corrupted.

Testdisk can fix this and make the hard drive bootable again.
