Translation of a death certificate?
« on: Thursday 01 May 08 12:49 BST (UK) »

Hi

I have a copy of the death of my g.g.grandfather who died in Ayr in May 1901 but cannot read some of it and I wondered if anyone is able to get it  online and tell me what some things say please?

If so, his name was David Whittaker.

Against the word Labourer in column 2 might be time of death etc., but  I cannot make it out and I cannot make out Cause of death either.

Hopefully someone will be able to see what it says, I hope!

Many thanks

If the writing is faint, get on to ScotlandsPeople and say it is illegible.

If the writing is just downright poor, can you please post the section (not the whole thing!) that is is posing the problem and let RootsChatters see if they can help.  They love a challenge.  Smiley

Hi there

The certificate actually gives very little data on David so you must have other knowledge and/or resources that confirm this death is indeed your ancestor.

David Whittaker
Labourer
Died 7 May 1901 at 11:30 AM in Kyle Union Poor-house, Ayr
Male 60 Yrs
Parents are both listed as Unknown
Cause of death looks like "Cerebral" ---- months"
The informant was the governor of the Poor-house.

A photo of the poor-house appears on this webpage: http://www.scan.org.uk/knowledgebase/topics/poorhouses_topic.htm

As has been suggested a contact form via www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk will enable you to request a clearer photocopy anytime you download a certificate that you're unable to read.

Best wishes
Jean
