Good afternoon,
I don't know if anyone has access to PR's for Stanhope, Weardale and Westgate areas, or can give me a link ?
I have ancestors called ARMSTRONG - inevitably blacksmiths with a name like that - who appear to have been born in or around the area, and records by the usual channels are either incomplete or seem to be inexistant.
In particular:
John ARMSTRONG born 1823 in Weardale, Stanhope. Parents Walter & Mary ARMSTRONG.
John married Isabella ELLIOTT (b. 1828 in Lamsley near Birtley) in Newcastle in 1846
Walter (possibly Walton) ARMSTRONG was also a blacksmith, apparently born in Westgate c1798 Walter married Mary Something, born c1793 in Bishop Wearmouth, and they seem to have had about 6 children: - Mary b. 1817 -John b. 1823 - Frances b. 1827 - Elizabeth b. 1830 - Thoomas b. 1834 - Margaret b. 1837
All born in Bishops Wearmouth.
Any insights or tips on how to proceed would be very welcome. Many thanks,
Nick

Hi Nick,
There are some Stanhope records in the Bishops' Transcripts on the link I gave you in your other thread.
Looks like you'll be busy!!
Cheers

I've found it now and figured out how to use it ! Certainly takes time, but I've already traced one baptism record.
Thanks for the tip !

Hi Nick
This looks like your ARMSTRONGs in Market Place, Houghton le Spring in 1841
Walton ARMSTRONG, 40, Ag Lab Mary ARMSTRONG, 40 John ARMSTRONG, 15, Blacksmith Ann ARMSTRONG, 15 Johnathan ARMSTRONG, 10 Mary ARMSTRONG, 4
and in 1851 same address
Walton, Head, M, 53, Labourer, Westgate, Durham Mary, Wife, 51, Westgate, Durham Mary, dau, 14, Houghton le Spring
In 1861 John is married and his father, now called Walter, is living with him
Do you think this is the right family? It doesn't appear to match the information you have posted.

UPDATE
I've just noticed your census lookup thread so can see how you arrived at Bishop Wearmouth. I think you have the wrong John in 1841 so that's where the confusion has arisen.

Good evening,
I've just looked back through my files, and your findings have solved a couple of discrepancies which had been puzzling me for a day or two ! Yes, you've got the right family I think, and the 1841 and 1851 Censuses fit in. I had been barking up the wrong tree, led astray by the wrong 1841 Census.
I have the 1861 Census with the father living with Walter the son, in Byers Green.
In 1851 Walter the son was with his wife Isabella and 2 children at Newbottle Lane, Houghton.
Thank you very much for your time and trouble. You've put me back on the right track !!
Nick
