Hi Frank
I know you are looking for BMD records, but the census info should help you towards those ends.
In 1871, John Henry Hansell is living at 1 Burnside Place, New Kilpatrick. He is age 28 (b.c.1843) born at Newton Stewart, Wigtonshire. A Storekeeper (dye Work).
He is with:
Mary Young, 60, b. culross, perthshire (mother in law, as he is showing as son in law and Mary is head of household) Helen B K Young ( so is she Helen BENNET K Young?), 23, b. New Kilpartick. Presumably 7 and 1/2 months pregnant as Mary Elizabeth was born on 19th May and census was taken 2nd April. Mary Maggie H Young, 20, b. New Kilpatrick.
I'll go and look further now.
cheers
Ellen.

OK on 1881-1901 John Henry Hansell says he was born in England! He's a Janitor and/or Drill Instructor throughout.
Its the same family though.
1881 @ Pollokshields Bible School, Janitors House, Pollokshields, Tradeston, Glasgow.
1891 @ 11 Melville Street, Pollokshields, Tradeston, Glasgow
1901 @ same address.
children from censuses are:
Mary Elizabeth - b. 1871 Milngavie, Stirlingshire (previously New Kilpatrick) Jane/Jeannie - b. 1875 Milngavie John R - b. 1878 Milngavie Helen H Y/Nellie - b. 1888, Pollokshields
So far can't trace John Henry before 1871, but will keep trying.
Cheers
Ellen.

Hi again Frank
After trawling through the censuses, I'm leaning towards a family in Yorkshire as being John Henry Hansell's, but no confirmation as yet. (And where he would have got Newton Stewart, Wigtonshire, from is anybody's guess at this moment in time!!)
On 1851 census @ Lofthouse, Guisborough, Ormesby, Yorkshire:
John Hansell, 35, (b. c 1816 @ Ormesby, Yorkshire), Shoemaker Jane, 32, (b. c1819 @ Crathorne, Yorkshire) Thomas, 9 JOHN, 8 Dorothy, 6 Richard, 4 Robert & Isabella, 2 (twins?) Charles, 1month.
1861, family are still at Guisborough, but Kirk Leatham is address:
All same as above, except young JOHN (who would by now be 18) is not at home.
Additional children in 1861:
Edward, 7 James, 5 Mary, 4 Arthur, 9months.
There are 3 Jane Humble marraiges shwoing on freebmd in Yorkshire in the right timeframe. I'm estimating around 1840 +/- a couple of years, as eldest child Thomas was born c 1841/2.
July/Aug/Sep Qtr 1840 - Jane Humble - Knaresborough, West Riding Yorkshire Jan/Feb/Mar Qtr 1841 - Jane Humble - Sculcoates, East Riding Yorkshire Jan/Feb/Mar Qtr 1842 - Jane Humble - Dewsbury, West Riding Yorkshire
Trouble is I can't find a John Hansell marraige to tie in with any of those. Only one I can see at the mo is
Apr/May/Jun Qtr 1839 - John Hansell - Guisborough, North Riding Yorkshire
I'm really not good on English stuff, but I'll go and have another ferret around and see what I can come up with. Need to find out where the Joh Hansell jnr from the above family is in 1861.
I'll be back!
Ellen.
Added later: Just checked John Henry's death cert on scotlandspeople and his father is noted as a Shoemaker!! so this makes this family look even more likely.

Monica you're a star!!
However!!! I'm now kinda back to the drawing board a bit on this one.
Checking on the progress of the above John Hansell snr and Jane through the censuses, they are still together in Ormseby 1871 and 1881. 1891 John Hansell is in the workhouse, a widower, still somewhere in Ormesby (and what a huge workhouse - there's hundreds of inmates ).
BUT - I've just downloaded John Henry Hansell's marraige cert to Helen Bennet Young from sp 24 Jun 1870 - and - his father John Hansell, Cord Winder, is deceased, and mother Jane Hansell ms Humble looks to still be alive.
Where did Mary Elizabeth, his daughter get the info that her grandad was a shoemaker when she registered his death in 1916. Families!!
OK, I'm off to get my head around what we've got so far and I'll be back. Maybe a wee g + t will help the brain cells work
Cheers
Ellen.
Oops - forgot to mention that on John Henry's death cert it states he was a Chelsea Pensioner and Janitor. So maybe he was away fighting (India was on at that time wasn't it?) at time of 1861 census. I certainly can't find him yet in either Scotland or England.

And just for the record to complete the censuses for John Hansell snr and Jane (Humble/Humell),
1841 @ Ormesby
John Hansell, 20 (ages were rounded down in 1841 census to nearest 5 yrs), Shoemaker Jane, 20 William, 1yr.
Presumably young William did not survive as he's not showing on 1851, or may be living with grandparents. But at least he fits with the 1839 marraige.
In spite of all the discrepancies uncovered above, I'm fairly sure that this is still the right family for John Henry Hansell. There's just no other family with the right combination of parents/son that fits. Just got to prove it now. Somehow!!
Ellen.

Hello again Frank.
Haven't been on for a few days, but back on the trail for you now.
1851, the family are living at 4, Strathblane Road (Mr Glassfords Houses), Milngavie, East Kilpatrick, Stirlingshire. some of the ages are transcribed slightly wrongly I think, but its the right family.
David Young, Head, 57, b. Dunfermline, Fife, Road Surfaceman. Mary, wife, 42, b. Culross, Fife Robert, son, 31 (should be 21), b. Tulley Allen (nowadays Tulliallan), Perthshire, Calico Printer Peter, son, 18 William, son, 15 Alexander, son, 11 Elisabeth, daur, 6 Helen, daur, 3 Mary, daur - showing as 36 years, but I'm sure this is Mary Margaret, b. 1851, so probably should read 3 months.
On the 1861, they are at Newtown, New Kilpatrick, Stirlingshire.
David is now showing as 69 years, a Forrester, b. Salen, Fife. Mary is 52, b. Culross and they just have the three girls with them, Elisabeth, 15, Helen, 13 and Mary Margaret, 10.
On the 1841, David and Mary are at Milngavie New Town, New Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire with the four boys. David showing as 40 years, and Ag Lab, and Mary as 30 years.
Hope this helps.
Cheers
Ellen.

To Whom It May Concern,
I see on your site that you have a Tully in the family, so I am going through all the Tully families just to find the right one that is connected to my side of the family tree.
In my family tree I have Rezan Tully and I am searching the Tully and Speechley family, that used to live in India. My G-G-G- grandmother Rezan Tully married G-G-G- grandpa George Speechley about 1857 in India.
Do you have any family members that are related to the above family. As they are in my family tree which belongs to the Speechley side of the family. George's parents were George and Mary Speechley, can you shed some light on this family as I would be most greatful.
I have now hit a dead end, trying to find this family. As I am trying very hard to put a family tree together for my family here in Australia. My father has passed on and left us with no clues at all to his side of this family.
I have searched for this information, and been to every site possible regarding Speechly/Tully Families who lived in India.
Best Regards
Lesley

Hi Lesley
Welcome to RootsChat
I have Tull(e)ys in my main lines but not connected to yours.
There is a marriage reference to Rezan and George:
1857: Speechly, George to Tully, Rezan 38/49
From Madras Marriages 1851-1870 "S's"-
http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/INDIA/2003-01/1041521616
Might be worth following up to see whether parents' information was recorded in these certificates.
