Judith Evans of Winchcomb
« on: Thursday 01 May 08 23:51 BST (UK) »

I wonder if anyone can help with a Judith Evans born in 1638 in Winchcomb, her father was Evan Price.
I would like to know who she married and just where she died, I am told it was in 1694/6, the only Judith Evans who died in 1694 was one in Llandefeilog, Carmarthenshire in Wales which would make sense as the family I am following had origins in that area, maybe she went back there or was recorded there.
Any information on her father Evan would also be welcome, not sure why he was Price and his daughter was Evans, hope someone has info on them

Hi Robin

I think you might need to be a bit clearer to get the info you want.

Where did you get the info about her from in the first place?

The IGI tends not to have death information, so unless you know which parish she might have died in it would be along trawl to find her.

Was EVANS perhaps a first married name - have you looked for a marriage for the Carmarthenshire girl that you found?

Neither PRICE nor EVANS are particularly common names for the Winchcombe area, although perhaps a few Monmouthshire people migrated across, they are more often found in the westerly parts of the county.

The change of name PRICE/ EVANS would be explained by following the Welsh patronymic system where they father's first name becomes the child's surname.

Kind regards, Arranroots  Wink

Arranroots
Thank you for your reply - what you say about the patonymic system really makes sense.
I am interested in Judith Evans because I have an ancestor with no surname, but we are pretty certain she is Evans - a long explanation, won't bother with that but we are trying to find a link to the Evans name to either prove or disprove - prove, if possible, would be better!
She was Susannah and had one daughter named Judith, her granddaughter was also named Judith and as that name appears pivotal, I thought a Judith Evans of the area may well have been a close relative of hers or even her mother. That was why I just thought I would see if anyone had information about who she married.
As for the death in 1694, another relative also searching, emailed me and gave me that date for her death, I have not found out where or how he came up with that date. A death of a Judith Evans is recorded in Llandefeilog in 1694 which is so near to Carmarthen and Kidwelly - which is where Susannah's husband's family originally came from in Carmarthenshire. It is certainly a long way from Gloucestershire. It was also just a couple of of years later that Susannah's daughter Judith was born.
Another link is that Judith's father married an Elizabeth and that was the name of Susannah's other granddaughter
I also realise that back then in the 1600's that cousins often married each other.
There is such a strong Welsh connection in her husband's line which makes your mention of the system where the father first name becomes the child's surname very interesting.
As Judith was Judith Evans, and her father was Evan Price, I would guess that Evan's father's name was Price or Rhys, any ideas on that.
Many thanks for your help, it was a bit of a stab in the dark, but your answer has cleared up why her father had a different surname.

There is a problem with your request (!) in that Judith would have died with the surname of whoever she married - so if her maiden name was EVANS it should have changed if she married - hence any Judith PRICE deaths you find should only be her if she isn't yours!  Roll Eyes Grin

According to Genuki Winchcombe parish records are in the record office in Gloucester and we do have a few lovely people who go there, so you might get lucky!

It sounds as though you need to look for Judith EVANS marriage records and see where that leads you.

Yes, you can email Gloucester & I believe they are pretty good about replying.

As I say, someone might be going that way, so be patient ...
