Have you found the baptism of James and Martha?

Also do you have approx birth dates for James and Grace? Why would they move to Windsor from Wiltshire?  What was James's trade.

I can see where Jap is coming from regarding the certs, Aus certs contain more information regarding parentage than ours. Thought that is not conclusive either as I have found out.  Also are there any clues in his conviction papers... where was he convicted?

lol, I have a convict that went from a small village just outside Windsor to Paramatta a little later than yours!

Windsor, Berkshire isn't the easiest places to search as its not on the IGIs

Hi Liz,

I'm not doubting your relationship to Thomas MAY  Smiley  When I said "I presume that you are quite sure that Thomas is your ancestor", I was just double-checking.  You've confirmed that he is.  So the question remains how (if it's at all possible  Cry ) to try to trace backwards from the first known record of Thomas.  Incidentally, what is the earliest known record of Thomas found so far, please?

I asked about the source of suggestions/statements:

a) that Thomas was (or might have been) the son of convict James MAY.  (From Googling I note that there was a convict named James MAY who arrived in 1804 on the 'Coromandel' having been sentenced to 7 years transportation in Surrey in 1803; if this is the chap, do you have any further information about him?)
and
b) that Thomas was (or might have been) the son of a James MAY & Grace TROLLOPE (who married in Wiltshire in 1802)

I ask questions like these solely in the hope that it will help us all to help you.

Perhaps you might post any info about the relevant passengers (especially names and, if known, ages) on the 'Experiment' (you mentioned this ship in your last post) in case this helps?  Also its date of arrival?

Just to summarize what I think we have for certain so far (I do this for my own benefit so that I don't have to keeping checking back through the thread  Smiley ):
* your ancestor Thomas MAY lived in NSW and his approximate birthdate was 1802 (is that from certificates?)
* a James MAY & a Grace TROLIP married in Trowbridge, Wiltshire in 1802; they may or may not be relevant
* the only record in the IGI for children of the above couple is the baptism in 1802 and death in 1803, in Trowbridge Wiltshire of a son Frederick James

From the NSW BDM (plus some other info) I note the following early entries which might be relevant:
# MAY Thomas m MEALMAKER Rebecca 1823, St Phillip's CofE Sydney in 1823; children were  born to them.  I guess this is your Thomas?
# you've referred to Thomas MAY's business partner John KETTLE.  A Google finds a reference to a John Icke KETTLE as Thomas MAY's brother-in-law.  NSW records show an 1827 marriage of a John KETTLE and an Ann MAY, Scots Presbyterian Church Sydney; children were born to them.  An Ann KETTLE (same person?) died age 41 in 1851
# early MAY 'birth' records (actually baptisms I guess) in NSW include (there are others)
- Ann MAY 1807, parents James & Grace
- Ann MAY 1820, parents James & Grace
- Elizabeth MAY 1820, parents James & Grace
# some early MAY NSW death records which might be relevant include the following (names which have been mentioned on this thread); however, there are also several other early MAY deaths
- Martha MAY d 1804, Martha MAY infant d 1805
- Grace MAY d 1817 age 38
- James MAY d 1819 age 48

One of the biggest problems is that these records are so early - and therefore long pre-date the times of wonderful extensive details in Australian records.

Some things that I'm wondering about include:
a) I can't seem to see any record which links Thomas MAY with parents named James & Grace - do you have something?

b) the three baptism records for children of a James MAY & Grace are a bit puzzling.  I wonder whether the actual church records (which denominations?) contain any further details e.g. whether they mention the ages of Ann, Ann & Elizabeth and/or any further details about their parents?  I guess it's possible that (especially) the 1820 records were baptisms/re-baptism of older children and that the dates don't relate at all to their birthsdates -  indeed, the two baptisms for an Ann might be for one and the same person?  I guess that the Ann MAY who m John KETTLE in 1827 must have been born by ca 1811 at the latest ...

All the best,

JAP

I would also want to see the marriage entry for James and Grace, given there is a 10 age gap its quite possible Grace is his second wife.  Even early records usually state Widower/batchelor Spinster/Widow of this parish

I know that isn't always the case, I have plenty of men who married late in life in my tree... seems to be a trend!

Hi jc26red,
You mention a "10 age gap" (possibly 8, I think, according to the possible death dates in the NSW records) - but, remember, as far as information on this thread is concerned, we don't yet know whether those deaths are Thomas's parents nor whether they are the same people as the Trowbridge couple.
Nevertheless, of course, the parish register for the Trowbridge couple could well be looked at - as I suggested earlier.

So, Hi again Liz,
Something I said earlier but forgot to repeat/ask in my last post was (this relates to James MAY & Grace TROLIP of Wiltshire):
Quote from: JAP
Have you looked at the entries in the Parish Register for these events just in case they provide a clue?
Films of parish registers can be ordered in to your nearest LDS Family History centre for a small charge.

Cheers,

I agree Jap,

I live quite close to Berkshire RO but unless there is more to go on, I think it would be a fruitless journey to try and find a birth

jc26red,

Well, who knows  Cheesy

I guess that for Thomas MAY the mention of Windsor as a birthplace (yes, just to confuse the issue there is, naturally, also a place in New South Wales called Windsor and it was settled very early on ...), and the mention of a birthdate of ca 1802, must have come from somewhere ...  Not to mention the idea of possible parents named James & Grace ...  And the possible convict connexion ...  Let's hope Liz will supply further info about all of this.

Incidentally, as NSW was only settled (invaded/colonized) in 1788, these are really early days we are getting into as far as Oz records are concerned ...

Anyway, if you do manage to look at the Windsor Berkshire parish registers, you might just hit on the key to solve all the problems of this thread  Grin

I know nothing at all about Berkshire or Wiltshire.  My and my children's English ancestors (leaving aside the Irish and Scots) came from (in alpha order) Lancashire, Leicestershire, London/Middlesex/Surrey, Warwickshire, and Yorkshire.  The earliest of all the ancestral emigrants to Aus arrived ca 1841 as far as I know and none later than ca 1890 (the last via NZ) - and all of their descendants until very recently were born in Oz.  Iwas born in Oz but lived in Cambridgeshire for a couple of years - and my middle child was born there ...  But though all of my and my children's ancestors arrived in Oz 1841-ca1890, it happens that only one of my 5 grandchildren was born in Oz ...  Weird, eh  Roll Eyes

Cheers

JAP
PS: Liz, perhaps there is something useful in the early NSW musters?

I'll see if I can get there next week... BBQ preparing for this evening at the minute  Grin

Berkshire records are ok, Parish records for Windsor are hit and miss and burials are  Lips Sealed

I had a similar problem with a contact of mine in Australia, his ancestor is supposed to come from the same town in Somerset where my paternal line originate. Same surname. I have transcribed the parish records for the town and everyone with that surname are related, so I was pretty sure we linked up. But when he eventually sent me his tree, and marriage cert it became obvious his ancestor didn't come from that town,  the ancestor stated he came from that town but the parents and siblings were all wrong. It transpired he came from Wales  Undecided  why the ancestor decided to give a different birth location is a mystery.

Hi Jenny,

I think there were some very 'inventive' stories about ancestors by people in Oz - especially in the early days (not surprising since there were so many descendants of convicts trying to prove a more 'respectable' background, and so many people trying to prove any background at all).

Even in my youth it was a matter of pride to be able to prove that one was NOT descended from convicts (my mother boasted about having the passage certificates of her great-grandparents!).  But now it is a real social cachet to have convict ancestry  Roll Eyes  We are all madly trying to find convicts for ourselves ...  Sadly I haven't found any to date.

One of my ancestral names (HACKING) is shared with a Quartermaster of the First Fleet (said to be related - though I think my lot wouldn't have claimed a connexion had they known what a rogue he was).  But, even though he wasn't a convict but only a rogue, one set of his own descendants invented an incredible story to divorce themselves from him - fortunately another of his descendants has set it to rights.

I guess it was much easier to bignote oneself from the distance of Oz than if one had been living back in one's own ancestral UK village  Grin

Enjoy your BBQ - long past bedtime here.
