ALB file
« on: Thursday 01 May 08 14:01 BST (UK) »

Just restoring some photographs which were backed up to disc prior to setting up new computer , which is running with Vista (spit).  Old systems XP (kissy kissy)  Sorry about that, Vista driving me nuts.
Anyway, all of the pictures have restored except the one I want to use (sods law).  The pictures are saved in a folder.  When I tried to open it I got the message "OOh, cant open this one Jean" or words to that effect.
The file says it is an Alb file then Cdlabel 835kb.  The Cedlabel looked to be a CD label programme, the only one I use is Epsoms CD creator but the programme will not open it.  Shouldn't open it anyway, as it is not a cd collection but a set of photos.  Can anyone explain what is going on and tell me how I can get at the pictures?  Thanks in anticipation.  Jean

When you look at the folder contents using My Computer does it have a little icon next to the file or files?

Did you use Paint Shop Pro to create this ablum?

I can find something about a .alb file associated with JSAC Image Commander album and the JASC usually means Paint Shop Pro.

What was the exact message you received when you tried to open it?

I did not use Paint shop to create the file.  I scanned the pictures and saved them in My Pictures.  All the other pictures have opened ok except this folder.  When I try to open it I get a message saying this file is not supported.  It is currently trying to open in Paint Shop Pro Photo x.  Jean

Maeve,

when you scanned the photos in the folder, did you scan them as jpeg files?

Did you restore them and put them in the folder? if so what graphics software are you using and have you installed it on the Vista pc....

a alb-file is just something like a directory or a table of contents - it doesn't actually contain a picture file. Have you done a search for the photo you are looking for  else where.

It might be some kind of slide show file that contains a number of images in one album file, like a Macromedia flash file.

The pictures in this folder were all scanned and saved as jpeg files in "My Pictures". Prior to setting up new computer this folder, along with 210 other pictures, some in folders, some individual files, were all saved to disc.
Today, having spent most of the day trying to access this folder I got fed up and went to make a coffee.  When I came back - after leaving the disc in the drive - I noticed that it was asking me if I would like to open this disc in Microsoft Pictures.  Not having tried this one, I did so and the pictures appeared.  Before they had chance to dissapear, I copied the picures - tagged them and anything else it asked me to do.  Fingers crossed, took out the disc, re-booted computer and the pictures are there, in Pictures.
Of course now I will have to remove 200 pictures which I didnt want but at least I have the ones I wish to print out.  Thank you all for your help - this one is a mystery.  Regards Jean

Hi Jean

A possible solution might be to try and open the files in Irfanview and then convert to jpg from there.

If you don't have it Irfanview is free and reads most files and does lots of other things  Smiley

Hope this helps.

Going to make a coffee seems to be a bad move  Angry  the computers seem to use the time to get into mischief and mess up.  I swear they have a life of their own, and do it deliberately.  If you leave them alone and ignore them, they sometimes behave, I have noticed.   But some of them are stubborn little beggars.

After finally being able to open my pictures, I went back into the kitchen to retrieve my coffee. I had treated  myself to one of those all singing all dancing coffee makers, which make all types of coffee and even froth the milk.
Went to pour out the coffee, dropped the glass jug, knocked the coffee machine on the floor and broke the milk frother.  It now lives in the dustbin.  I could not believe what a rotten day I had,  all down to blinking Vista.
