Could someone help a poor bog eyed person ! I have been searching on Ancestry for a friend who doesn't have it and trying to find a Frederick Atkins of Leicester, born 1826. She is looking for him in the 1901 census as she was told he died in 1906. His occupation is a Brass Finisher but I suppose by 1901 he may not be working at age 75. I have searched all through the census pages changing the searches so many times now that I cant remember. I have tried all countries, all counties, left off the age, soundtex, exact, you name it I have done it, but she is still sure that he should be there. I can find a couple of Fred Atkins but not the right age. She doesn't have any other clues. I have been looking for so long that it makes me think that I have looked for this chap before and have asked for help on here (and got it) - maybe it was another Atkins. Anyway, any help would be appreciated, I am beginning to think that she must have his date of death wrong and that he departed before 1901.

Frederick seems to be living apart from the family in 1881-1901
Working backwards if this is the correct family:
1901 (when Frederick was in the workhouse) RG13 Piece 2882 Folio 8 Page 8 80 Carpenter's Rd, Aston Manor, Birmingham John Upton head m 40 Chain Maker Warwicks Aston Eliza E " wife m 40 Draper Birmingham John E " son 9 " Hannah Atkin mother-in-law m 68 " Mary A Atkin sister-in-law s 44 Paper Box Maker Birmingham
1891 RG12/2386 Folio 93 Page 25 312 Brearley St, Birmingham Hannah Atkin head m 58 Silver Chain Maker Birmingham Mary A " dau s 34 Paper Box Maker " John Upton son.in.law m 30 Bicycle Fitter " Eliza A " dau m 30 " Eliza Briggs sis.in.law wid 75 Nottingham
1891 the only Frederick I can find as yet so just a possible: RG12/2728 Folio 71 Page 2 17 Green Lane, St. Peters, Derby Bernard Townsend head m 23 Eating House Keeper London Minnie " wife m 24 Lincs.Ingolmells (probably Ingoldmells) Jane Rickett servant s 24 General Servant Derbyshire Derby Frederick Atkins lodger s 64 Fish Hawker & Laborer Notts, Nottingham
1881 not found Frederick yet RG11/299 Folio 41 Page 38 91 Lower Hockley Place, Birmingham Hannah Atkins head mar 48 Chain Maker Mary Ann " dau s 24 Box Maker Harriet " " s 21 " " Eliza Ann " " s 20 Chain Maker John *Rock? father.brother? wid 66 Emily Cashmore lodger m 28 Burnisher all born Birmingham (*marriage for a Frederick Atkins to Hannah Hirk on IGI 1855 Birmingham) 1871 already given
1861 RG9/2159 Folio 16 Page 27 16 Court, 2 House, Hospital Street, Birmingham Frederick Atkin head m 25 Pistol Maker Nottingham Hannah " wife m 28 Birmingham Harriet " dau 1 " Eliza An " " 1 Mo "
1851 HO107/2058 Folio 154 Page 7 77 Upper Hospital St, Birmingham Samuel Briggs head m 31 Lace Maker Ilkeston Derbyshire Eliza " wife m 34 Nottingham Fredric Atkin brother s 16 Watch Pendant Maker Nottingham
of course this may be the completely wrong Frederick, but nearest to a Brass Finisher that I could find

His death is found in 1906 Leicester, she tells me he was also born in Leicester !!!
Where has your friend found this? I have just checked the full GRO index and there is no death listed in 1906 Leicester for any Atkin or Atkins with Frederick as either a first or second forename
What is even more confusing she looked on Genes and found a Frederick Atkins livining in Leicester during the 1901 census, because she is not registered could not take a closer look.
I have looked on genes and there is only one Frederick Atkins listed in 1901 census born 1826 and that is the one in Derby, the Brass Finisher. There are about 12 Frederick Atkins listed as living in Leicestershire and none has a birthdate as early as 1826, so I think your friend must have mistaken that entry
So if its on Genes surely its on Ancestry Yes, genes has exactly the same people as on ancestry!
Trouble is she doesn't have any other details of the family so its hard to connect.
Carol, what is your friend's starting point, how does Frederick connect to her tree, she must have some details to want to begin tracing him?
Kind regards, Barbara

Barbara,
thanks so much for your help. These are the very reasons that I thought I was missing something. I had found the fella in Derby and the death in 1926 also Derby, as you did, I found a few Atkins in Leicester, but none on the right age or even close. My friend has quite a substantial family tree built over 30 years, this Frederick has always been someone she could not find. I think she may be looking in the wrong place Everything fits for Frederick in Derby and I am now convinced (with your help) that this is who she is looking for. I also noticed that in all the Atkins that I have searched (all counties) that the one in Derby is the only Brass Finisher. I will print off the ancestry pages for. I am not sure what her starting point is for Frederick, I will ask and let you know how I get on, Thanks again for you help.
Carol

Yep I love a challenge too, its great to know that if it gets too much we have the great people on rootschat to help out when the challenge becomes a little too much !!!
Went back to my friend with the questions, mainly how did she know he was born in Leicester, you were right Barbara, it was something that she had been told by his son, turns out that she wasn't sure after all. We can safely say that Frederick from Derby born in Nottingham is our chap ! she also confirmed that she believed he was in a workhouse, along with the fact that it was the only brass finisher that I came across, how could it possibly be anyone else I will print of the Derby details and make an "older" lady very happy this weekend. I have told her about your help on rootschat and told her to join us here. Thanks for everything
