Hi
I am looking for a possible Death of George Day b 1834, Bishop Stortford, and possibly died in 1879-1881, Walthamstow
His wife Emma is living on her own in the 1881 Census and her youngest child is 1 year.
Thanks,
Dee

Is Emma a widow in 1881?

Hi:
Emma is shown as unmarried, which confused me. I'm pretty sure it's the same Emma Day - same age and birth location and she did have a mother named Betsey - who had been married a couple of times. Emma's kids also have the last name day and she is shown as their Mother - so the unmarried reference is strange. So I think it's her.
My mother who is now 91 - always understood that Walter George was in a workhouse or something - but didn't know why or when. So I'm thinking that perhaps something happened to the Dad (sick, ran off, or died) and the older kids were out on their own, middle kids to a workhouse and little ones still at home.

Here is what I know:
I have been able to follow both on the census in 1841 & 1851 before marriage.
I don't have the marriage certificate, but they were married on Nov 8, 1858, Bethnal Green (familysearch.org Emma Jago & George Day). In 1860 they have their 1st son Thomas, born Harlow. I have that document from (Seax) In the 1861 Census - they are at Maidenhead Yard, Hertford - with their baby Thomas In 1868 - my Gr Grand Walter George Day was born - I have the birth certificate (parents Emma Day (formerly Jago) & George Day In the 1871 Census - they are at Shernhall Street, Walthamstow Essex - and now have 5 kids In the 1881 Census - Thomas Day abt 1861 b Harlow Essex, Lodger living with the Putman's and he's a shoemaker in Walthamstow Emily Day abt 1864 Manuden Essex , visiting Annie & Edward Jago, Epping Essex Elizabeth Day abt 1866 Walthamstow, Essex -neice visiting Charlotte Jago - London Emma Day - appears to be living in Leyton - 1 Hampden Terr - this could be a different Emma Day -- however her age and birth location match. Emma Day 1840 Bishop Stortford head/mother Jesse Day 1875 Walthamstow dau Ernest 1880 Walthamstow. son Betsey Cole 1821 Leyton Essex (Possibly Emma's Mother - formerly a Jago but remarried George Burgess in 1850, after her 1st husband died - perhaps she married a 3rd time to a "Cole"? William Wright 1830, unmarried, boarder, Bruton, Somerset According to family rumour Walter George Day may have spent some time in a workhouse or something while he was growing up. I think that George Day might have died although I can’t find a record for his death nor can I locate him anywhere. The older kids were out on their own and the youngest were with Emma and perhaps the 3 middle children went to a workhouse? There is a record for George, Harriet and Percy at the West Ham Union School in Leyton Low. Their birth locations and ages are a bit off though.
There is a possible death for Emma Day (BMD 4th QTR 1888 West Ham) No idea who looked after Jesse & Ernest after Emma Died.
1891Thomas Day is married and in Croydon, Surrey Percival E. Day is a boarder nearby at the Horse & Groom Pub, Croydon, Surrey
Percival later joins the military, serves in India, retires from the military and makes his home in Taunton, Somerset. (personal knowledge)
Walter George - unknown in 1891 - but gets married in 1892 in Lowestoft, Suffolk - I have the certificate - also personal knowledge
No idea who the girls married or what happened to them?
So ..... my best guess is that the father George Day died and left Mom with lots of kids, around 1879 -1880, just before or just after Ernest was born. But I have nothing to prove that he died - although he never shows up on a census anywhere.
I would like to find some record to confirm that Walter George was in a workhouse, and I would like to determine if his father's death may have preceded this event.
Dee
