Can anyone please do a quick lookup 1851, somewhere in Staffordshire?
I have a Samuel Dudley missing from his home in West Bromwich in 1851. He was only 7 (so probably born about 1844), so I'm assuming he's with relatives somewhere.
I've found a possible in HO107/piece 2026.
There appears to be another Dudley family on the same page, headed by Edward <1802> with 4 children.
Could someone check if Samuel is with them and, if so, any relationship given (of course it could be just co-incidence that there is a Samuel of the right age on that page).
Sorry to ask but can't get back to the library to check for myself for at least another week.

Hi
The family headed by Edward does not show any relationship for Samuel
The other children in the household are shown as sons but his column has just been left blank
All children b Bilston and the address is just Square - West Bromwich
Edward Dudley 49 puddler b Bilston - widower Elizabeth Spooner 41 b Derby - can't decipher relationship but she is shown as housekeeper Joseph Dudley 18 George 16 John 14 Benjamin 10 Samuel 6

Wow,
that was quick! Thanks very much.
I'm thinking that it could be the Samuel that I'm looking for as he isn't shown as part of that family. Can you tell me the address?
I'm trying to make the leap back a generation by finding the probable brothers and sisters of my GGGGrandfather and seeing if I can trace their descendants down through the censuses, looking for any evidence to support the relationships.
The family that this child is staying with definitely has close links with Bilston (but so far no proven relationship with my Dudleys) so it's looking good.
thanks again, Sheila

Thanks Carole too,
It's possible that Samuel belongs to Edward but can't find a suitable birth registration.
Edward's wife Charlotte seems most likely to have died 1848 so would have been possible for a child of that age for that marriage but the one missing from the other family was born West Brom.
There are so many Dudleys in the area but as they all seem to have had big families I'm beginning to work out that most of them are related to each other.
