Henry SIBLEY b. abt 1725
« on: Friday 02 May 08 20:32 BST (UK) »

Henry SIBLEY b. abt 1725 to Henry Sibley & Sarah CHAUKLY - in Kimpton, Hertfort? (place of birth not confirmed).

Family information is that Henry died in 1765 whilst returning from Halifax, Canada to England to settle his father's estate.  How would one go about finding information on the name of the ship and cause of his death?

Bio Notes:  Henry arrived in Halifax, Cda in 1749 with the Cornwall Fleet aboard the ship Beaufort.  Henry was stated to be a soapmaker.  Is there anyway to find out if there was a Sibley family in Hertfort involved in the soapmaking trade?

Any assistance or advice would be most welcome.

Hi Oops:

This does not appear to be the same Henry Sibley tho mine did die at sea in 1765.  Henry m. Sarah Heyslip  in Noval Scotia ater his lst wife Cornelia died.  Not sure who this Mary is unless Henry was married 3 times.  He arrived in N.S. 1749 with a wife Cornelia, two sons - David & Henry - plus one servant.  He is shown on ship's manifest as a Soapmaker.  Showing 6 children from his 2nd marriage - William, Henry John, Ezekial, Joseph, Cornelia & Gilbert.

Finding the will of this man's father would be a great help.  Have found 10 wills for men named Henry Sibley.  None of the dates seem to fit his father's death which should be prior to 1765 unless he was called to England  due to his father falling ill with some debilitating disease??  Could a will for this era for Sibley in Kimpton be in some other jurisdiction than Canterbury?  Living in Canada have no idea where these places are.  Thanks for the interest.

sorry Oops!  Forgot to mention that I am familiar with Dianne Sibley's site.  Several Sibley researchers in N. America.  Henry's son, John Henry Sibley left Nova Scotia after involvement in an attack on Fort Cumberland circa 1776.  His son Abraham m. a Mehitable Robidoux  - couple are my 3x g. grandparents.

There was another group of Sibleys in Massachusetts in the 1600's - probably Quakers and no idea if the two families were related in earlier times.

Thanks for your interest.  Spent some time in Family Search when finally discovering that Henry Sibley was born in England and emigrated in 1749 to N.S.  Had spent several years searching amongst the Massachusetts Sibley families.  This file was one of my brick walls for the longest time as could not figure out the maiden name of my Cordelia who m. a Sibley.  Her surname was also Sibley - a cousins marriage.  Some of the information posted on the Enchanted site has errors.  Cordelia is the daughter of Mehitable(Robidoux) Sibley.  Her nee side traces back to early French Acadia Robichaud family.  They were in the British Expulsion from Acadia 1750's and escaped to Massachusetts.

Definitely looking for information on the death of Henry Sibley circa 1765 at sea or some written notice of it.  Having the name of the ship would help, but so far its eluding me.  Am sure Henry's father would have had a will.  Does anyone know how long after death a will would be officially recorded in 1760's?  I have the list of several wills from Canterbury with the name of "Henry Sibley".  Am also thinking both Henry and his father would have had wills.  Ordering copies of all of them would be rather expensive.

If the N.S. Henry died aboard ship in 1765, approx when would a will have been filed?  Anyone want to take a guess?  Are we talking years, months or??

Thanks again.

Thank you Sylvia:

Have looked through these wills several times, but need to win the lottery to order them all for suitable dates.   Trying to decide what occupation our Henry would be listed under.  Also a possibility Henry might be his second name with legal name something else.  Henry landed in Canada listed as a Soapmaker so Tallow Chandler fits closely.  No will close to that date.

How long does it take to probate a will after death in England?  His widow, Sarah Heyslip (Haislip) Sibley is said to have left her children in the colony and hastened to England on learning of Henry's death.   Records show her in the Colony later dates so she must have returned.

No proofs, but think that Henry was one of the younger sons so came to Colony to make his fortune.  Then think the heir or heirs died so Henry was on way home to settle father's estate when he died.  This is just conjecture, but a likely scenario for the times.
