please help - marriage cert *COMPLETED*
« on: Friday 02 May 08 21:09 BST (UK) »

hi

i really need some advice - i want to order a marriage certificate from the 1960's, of my grandmother but we don't seem to be able to find a date.

How can i go about getting this certificate?

She is deceased, her name is Grace Enid, she married Harold Rigby ( also deceased).
Her maiden name was Morse but i know she married once before but i don't know his name.  I don't therefore know what name she used when she was married a second time, it could have been her maiden name or her first married name.

I have found her birth on ancestry mar 1915 cheshire,  she was also married in cheshire to harold rigby.

Any suggestions would be appreciated

sara

Hi

There's nothing on freebmd so you will need to search the full GRO index  which is available at your nearest main library if you live in the UK.  It can also be searched online if you have an Ancestry subscription or at www.findmypast.com which is a paysite

She was b 1915 so you need to search from about 1932

Be thankful she wasn't a Smith or a Jones as there won't be many Grace Enid Morse entries

Once you have the surname of her first husband, you can then search for her marriage to Rigby

Don't know whether this helps, my nan's first husband died, on her second marriage to my grandfather she used her married name not maiden name.

When you say you can't find the date where have you looked?
You need to find her first marriage  Undecided

hi, thanks for that,

i have looked on ancestry but cannot find the marriages.

just talking to my father, he thinks the first marriage was early 60's and then the second was late 60's.  harold rigby died before 1974, we know that is true.

i have just been looking at photos and we think we know which church they were married at...................

the same one as me incidently, of which i had no idea!!  i live in the area, is it possible to look tat parish records to find a date and then i can order the cert?

Hi Susan

That is the point of Sara's query - Grace would have married Rigby under her first married name and it is that first marriage that is needed to establish who she married

She was only born in 1915 so would not have married her first husband until after 1932

Grace would have been in her 40's in 1960 - would that be correct?

Did she have any children by either husband

Cheshire BMDs are on line

http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/cgi/marrind.cgi?county=cheshire

This tells you what has been indexed so far

hi, thanks for the guidance,

yes she had one child in 1962.

that is a possible marriage  - where did you find this indexed?

i have looked at Cheshire BMD and heswall isn't indexed in the 1960's.

i thought the second marriage was after 1962 but it could have been before.

thanks.............................

do you know if i can look at the parish registers?  would they be at the church or local archives?

I've just found it on Ancestry - definitely there, you need to search the FULL index then look at the image, not FreeBMD index
