I'd be happy to help with any enquiries about the village and people of Egerton. I'm just starting a new job so please forgive any small delays in my replies for a while.

Good Hunting!

Hi Martin and welcome.

I'm looking at the Usmer/Usmars from Egerton - in particular seeking the wife of Russell (b. abt. 1870) who I believe married abt. Aug. 1807.   I believe her name was Martha and may have been born abt., 1787, but can't find her maiden name.

Beware - I'm not the only Usmar seeker though!!

Good luck with the new job.

Hi Martin,

Im researching the Day family from Egerton, particularly Thomas c1833, his wife Sarah c 1838 (no idea of her maiden name though) and their sons Thomas c1857 and Charles c1881.

Thomas senior was a farmer, Thomas jr became a butcher.

Do you have any info on this family at all? I know there were a few Day families in the area.

Thanks, Jen

Mogsmum -

There are four member-submitted entries on the IGI for Russell Usmar - one for a baptism and three for the marriage.

Member entries are always dubious, but the marriage does have a complete date, so may have been transcribed from a film.

Marriage: Russell Usmer (sic) to Martha Ann Foster, 17th (or 27th, depending which entry you like best!) Aug 1807, Egerton.

I have Russell's baptism as 27 Nov 1779, son of Stephen Usmar and Jane Hodges.

(I descend from Jane's sister Mary Hodges, who married Pell Wilson in Egerton, and whose grandson John eventually migrated eastwards to the Faversham area.)

Thanks Martin, am off to check the website now.   I'm never quite sure which is worse, having just 2 people to choose between or a whole army!

Thanks also to wdurham - I clearly missed that one among all the other Usmers, thank you.

Well, there it is, thanks to Casalguidi's reference to the Mid Kent Marriage Index.

29 August 1807 - Russel Usmar to Martha Ann Foster in Egerton.

The IGI has a member entry giving her parents as William Foster and Susan Bates and a baptism in Egerton of 9 April 1787.  Which fits with your existing information.

William and Susan (or sometimes Susannah) seem to have had a frightening number of children in Egerton. But they are all member contributed entries, so should be taken with some salt. There are no IGI batch numbers that I have found for Egerton.

There have been recent additions to the IGI for Kent.  Batch number C042296 covers Egerton baptisms but they are early entries - up to about 1747.

You could also contact Martin Webb - see first post of this thread.
