Help reading place name on census
« on: Saturday 03 May 08 00:12 BST (UK) »

Hi everyone,

I have an entry in the 1851 census for a man living in London, who is recorded as being born in Cambridgeshire.  I'm having difficulty reading or locating the place that has been recorded.  Can anyone offer suggestions?  In subsequent census his birthplace is only recorded as Cambridgeshire.

Cheers,
Alison

I should add that the entry can be found at HO107/1550 Folio 200 page 53 Schedule 223 if anyone would like a look at the entire entry.  It looks to me like EISHAM but I can't find this place anywhere, so I'm at a loss.

Cheers,

Thanks for the suggestions so far.  I'll have a look at Isleham as it's sound plausible that it's been recorded phonetically.  The letter written immediately above the "E" or whatever it is, is a lower case 't' for Shoreditch, so I can't see how that wiggle above the letter is a tail from the letter above.  There is still a chance it could be a "W". Below is an upper case 'W' from the same gentleman's occupation.

Hi Alison

If it is Isleham, the place is quite close to the Cambridge/ Suffolk boarder, and they do have an accent, took me  a while to understand my OH as she comes from the same area

It is a hard one, just had a look for Blunt's on the 1841 for Cambridgeshire, most of them lived at Whittlesey, March, Haddenham or Wentworth area, and funny enough Witcham is very close to some of them places

Roll Eyes Tell me about it!

The gentleman in question is Clement BLUNT born about 1796 in ? Cambridgeshire. He married for the 2nd time to Caroline TURNWOOD in 1832 at St Dunstan, Stepney, London.  He is recorded as a Widower and she a Spinster.  In the 1841 census he has 2 children, Clement Jnr and George both aged 15 so could be aged anywhere between 15 and 19. They are both recorded in this and subsequent census as being born in London/Middlesex.  So he must have been in London c1820.   I've got to admit Clement is starting to annoy me with his elusiveness!!  Wink  A quick look at Isleham on the IGI came up with a blank so I'll give Witcham a try.

Thanks for all the suggestions!  Smiley

There is a Stephen BLUNT on the IGI baptising a daughter in Witcham in 1795! so I'll follow that lead a little closer!  Thank you both.
