1841 Census check please - William HARRISON
« on: Saturday 03 May 08 09:22 BST (UK) »

Good morning,

I would be very grateful if someone would check out details for the following household on the 1841 Census, which may have a lot of importance:

William HARRISON, aged 50, born in Darlington c1790  Agricultural Labourer or Gardener or Weaver.
Alice(wife), (née HOPPER) aged 50, born in Hurworth 1789.
Jane, aged 15
There may also have been a granddaughter called Jane, aged 1.

Domicile: Possibly Hetton Le Hole.

I'm looking for confirmation of the place of residence and in particular whether the 15 year old jane is mentioned as "daughter" and where the place of birth is given for her.

Many thanks,

Nick

Good morning Nick

The Village of Hurworth, Durham
HARRISON
William  50  Gardener
Alice      50  Ag. Lab
Jane      15
Jane        1

1841 census does not give relationships or place of birth other than whether or not born in county, and adult ages usually rounded down to the nearest 5 years

You've beaten me to it Barbara !

I had picked up Jane's existence through familysearch, but not found her in the Hurworth BT's, which I'm still trawling ! So had marked it with a query.
William is from Darlington, mentioned in the BT of the birth of his first son, Robert born Hurworth 19.06.1809. So my next move was to check Darlington BT's, which I'm still going to do, as I haven't an exact date for William's birth yet.

In the Hurworth BT's in 1814, 1816 and 1830 (birth of other children), William's occupation is described as "Weaver", on other dates as "labourer".

However, I'm pretty sure that what you have picked up in Darlington is spot on. Jane's birth fits in with other children of the couple.

So a great many thanks for your time and trouble. You've been very helpful.

Nick

PS: I think the 1 year old Jane is very probably a granddaughter - she appears again in the 1851 Census aged 10. If you have a moment, I would appreciate it if you could confirm whether they are still living in Hurworth village in 1851. I presume so.

Hi Nick,

Yes I thought you had access to the BTs, but as it happened I was already looking through them for someone else at the time so was able to find her quickly.

I thought you must have already got the information from the 1851 as you knew Jane was a granddaughter ~

1851 Hurworth, Darlington, Durham
Wm Harrison    head m 61 Gardener  Darlington
Alice     "          wife  m 61                  Hurworth
Jane     "      grand.dau  10                        "

Thanks for your confirmation. I've just found William in the Darlington BT's.

Bastard son of Eleanor Harrison, baptised in March 1790. William's first daughter was called Eleanor, very probably after his mother, so I feel there is a good chance I've found the right one, although knowing who his father was looks improbable !

Thanks for your help again.

Your input was much appreciated.

Do you know if there are any Bishop's Transcripts available for Yorkshire by any chance ? Consultable on-line I mean !

ancestry has some for Yorkshire, and freereg has some West Riding only, if you search under the place name on genuki that will tell you where records are kept.
Which place are you looking for?

Thanks for the tip.

Basically I'm interested in Guisborough and surrounding parishes, but also Osmotherley, Thirsk and Middlesbrough. If I'm not mistaken, that's essentially North Riding ?

Yes, that's right, all North Riding.  Ancestry has a list of Yorkshire parishes covered at http://www.rootschat.com/links/01so/

Cleveland Family Society has some Guisborough records on their website

The Internet Archive has about 30 sets of Yorkshire Parish registers free to view or download. Go to www.archive.org and search for Yorkshire Parish Registers. Transcribed at the end of the 19th century by the Yorkshire Parish Register Society. Put on the net in the last month or so by the University of Toronto. Hopefuly its a work in progress. You can't tell from the volume number which parishes they cover, so I listed them. They are big files.

vol 1 - Alborough 1538-1611
vol 90 - Great Ayton in Cleveland 1600-1812
vol 80 - Ripon 1574-1628
no number - Hickleton 1626-1812
vol 42 - Thirsk 1556-1721
vol 3 - Horbury 1598-1812
vol 40 - Thornhill pt 2 1678-1812 (mix of BMD's)
vol 44 - Has an error
vol 39 - Austerfield 1559-1812
vol 49 - Darrington 1567-1812
vol 33 - Otley pt1 1562-1672

vol 41 - Holy Trinity Church, Goodramgate, York 1573-1812
vol 50 - Harewood pt 1 1614 - 1812 (B&M)
vol 34 - Rothwell 1690-1812
vol 6 - Patrington 1570-1731
vol 12 - Brantingham 1653-1812
vol 19 - Bolton on Bolland 1558-1724
vol 38 - Settrington 1559-1812
vol 28 - Gargrave 1558-1812
vol 48 - Howden 1725-1770
vol 16 -  Marske in Cleveland 1569-1812
vol 15 - Cherry Burton 1561-1740
vol 8 - Blacktoft 1700-1812
vol 17 - Hartshead 1612-1812
vol 29 - Terrington 1599-1812
vol 52 - St. Mary, Bishophill Junioer, 1602-1812
vol 43 - Danby in Cleveland 1585-1812
vol 24 - Howden 1543-1702
vol 53 - Thornhill pt 3 1717-1812 (mix of BMD's)

That's an excellent site Alan, will save a trip to the local library! (Glad you showed the parishes though, or it would have been quite a search)

Thanks,
