« on: Saturday 03 May 08 11:35 BST (UK) »

I have just managed to trace my hornsby's to Whitby per IGI Matthew married Susannah Ross in Whitby  1826 Matthew b. 1802 Susannah b.1797 in Dany Cleveland her father John Ross.  Looking mother of Susannah now.  Any help would be appreciated as this is all new territory for me getting beyond 1800!!  Also Mathew Hornsby his father was Thomas and he married a Catherine Cook also in Whitby 1786.  Thanks

Hi,

Afraid I cannot help with Susannah's mother but was she definitely born in Danby??  I presume you have the children as they are on the IGI.

I have found the family on the 1841 & 1851 Census but on the 1851 is a Susannah Hornsby, widow, aged 51 who was a servant but gives Whitby as her place of birth.

I have also found some deaths on the NBI which may be some of the family:
Matthew Hornsby, buried 18 Feb 1850, aged 47 at Whitby
Catherine Hornsby, buried 15 Jul 1832, aged 1 at Whitby
Mary Hornsby, buried 26 Jan 1834, infant at Whitby
Sarah Ann Hornsby, buried 21 Sep 1838,aged 13 months at Whitby.

Do you have access to the Censuses?

Hi,

These are from the Danby transcripts.

John Ross married Elizabeth Seaton 20 Feb 1786.  Both of this parish.  Witnesses George Hoggarth, John Witton

Baptisms all children of John Ross, wright

John  - 30 Aug 1789.  Buried 1 Mar 1791
Hannah - 28 Jan 1792
John - 26 Nov 1794
Susannah - 15 Oct 1797
Elizabeth - 18 May 1800
Joseph - 15 Dec 1802
Jane - 4 Dec 1804

An earlier baptism, probably same family but no occupation of father given

Thomas, son of John Ross - 9 Jul 1786

Hi Nannawilk,

Sorry, it is actually the family of Matthew & Susanna Hornsby I was referring to.

Just would add that when you find a marriage & they are stated "ofp", it just means they were living there but doesn't mean they were born there which can be misleading.  This once happened to me!

Hi Gill,

I understand Inchamore is seeking the mother of Susannah ROSS I wasn't making any reference to your post!  I know the term botp only means that was where they were living I just quoted the transcription.

Cheers

Hi Gill,

Apology accepted and please accept mine in return if I seemed a bit sharp.  I also thought your post was from Inchamore at first - does get a bit confusing!!

Cheers

A big thankyou to both Gillywilly and Nannawilks for the helpwith this one.  I found Susannah on all census apart from 1841, and as you say was a widow in 1851.  Regards to John Ross that was brilliant.  Also perhaps you could tell me how to access the NBI re burials as I haven't used this before.  Thanks again folks.   Smiley
