ps
I have a "ruler" on my browser, so I measured:
the left hand column (frame, avatars and profile info) and the right hand column (frame and scroll bars) measure approx. 250 pixels. So for a standard laptop (the most common size) you then have about 750 pixels left.
This is why I always reccomend a maximum of 500-700 pixels width for photos. If it's too big it "stretches" the screen and then you have to scroll right and left to see the whole picture. This may not be so bad, if it's just a picture, but the biggest nuisance is that all the texts on that page (not just the one reply) adjust to fill the "stretched" screen, so people have to keep scrolling right and left to read each line
Some people don't like it and just don't bother to read the post at all then
Hope this helps, Bob

Hi Rabbit,
yes, that could be right.
About 5 years ago 800x600 was the most-used laptop size About a year ago, a survey said 1024x768 was now the most-used laptop siz and with these wide screen laptops, it will probably be 1400 * whatever in a couple of years.
this is part of a discussion about it:
Screen resolutions - There has been a marked decrease in use of 800 x 600 and 640 x 480; most common is still 1024 x 768; 1280 x 1024 is on the increase, and even bigger than that among occasional visitors
Yesterday I read about this report from a market research company. www.onestat.com has checked usage of several million web-pages and come up with the following data: 55 % of all users have a 1024 x 768 monitor display (standard laptop size) 17 % of all users have a 1280 x 1024 display (standard 19" monitor size) 3rd. place is 1280 x 800 (wide screen laptops) 8 % of all users have a 800 x 600 display (the earlier standard) Bob It's worth reading the whole topic

Hi Rabbit,
I know the feeling !!
At work I had two 17" CRT monitors and although the grafik card could handle 1280x1024 I found it was a strain to look at, so I changed the resolution to 1024x768 (see the link I gave above) and that was so much kinder for my eyes and easier to work with.
Last year I (finally) got two 19" LCD monitors, and because of the extra size I can now use the 1280x1024 resolution without problems.
But check the properties first, to see what your grafik card allows you. If it's an older card, you may just end up having an 800x600 picture in the middle of your screen, with a big black border all round it
