Image size reduction
« on: Saturday 03 May 08 13:00 BST (UK) »

Am I correct in thinking that if an image has to be reduced in size for attaching to a Rootschat post can one use millimetres instead of pixels ?  For example, if an image measuring 180 mm x 112 mm (620 x 377 pixels) is reduced by 50%  (90 mm x 56 mm / 310 x 188.5 pixels) would this be the size shown on the screen ?  The point I'm trying to make is (if I'm correct) that the finished size of the image would be more easily visualised using millimetres.

Hi Isles,

you are better to stay with pixels, because not every screen has the same  number of pixels per inch (or mm.)

click on an empty bit of your desktop
=> properties
=> settings

you will then see the size of your screen in pixels (e.g. standard laptop is 1024 x 768)
so you can then get a relative idea of the size of the image as a fraction of your screen width.

ps

I have a "ruler" on my browser, so I measured:

the left hand column (frame, avatars and profile info) and the right hand column (frame and scroll bars) measure approx. 250 pixels.
So for a standard laptop (the most common size) you then have about 750 pixels left.

This is why I always reccomend a maximum of 500-700 pixels width for photos.
If it's too big it "stretches" the screen and then you have to scroll right and left to see the whole picture. This may not be so bad, if it's just a picture, but the biggest nuisance is that all the texts on that page (not just the one reply) adjust to fill the "stretched" screen, so people have to keep scrolling right and left to read each line  Sad

Some people don't like it and just don't bother to read the post at all then  Sad Sad

Hope this helps,
Bob

Thanks again Bob. 500 - 700 pixels max. width.  If I exceed this I understand that I'll be hung from the yardarm (or even worse, banned from Rootschat   Grin)

Regards,
Isles.

I know he said it with a  Grin and meant it  Tongue

you have to do a lot, lot worse than that to get banned from Rootschat  Grin

But you might find that the mods. resize your images ....

Hi Rabbit,

yes, that could be right.

About 5 years ago 800x600 was the most-used laptop size
About a year ago, a survey said 1024x768 was now the most-used laptop siz
and with these wide screen laptops, it will probably be 1400 * whatever in a couple of years.

this is part of a discussion about it:
Quote
Screen resolutions - There has been a marked decrease in use of 800 x 600 and 640 x 480; most common is  still 1024 x 768; 1280 x 1024 is on the increase, and even bigger than that among occasional visitors

Yesterday I read about this report from a market research company.

www.onestat.com has checked usage of several million web-pages and come up with the following data:

55 % of all users have a 1024 x 768 monitor display (standard laptop size)
17 % of all users have a 1280 x 1024 display (standard 19" monitor size)
3rd. place is 1280 x 800 (wide screen laptops)
8 % of all users have a 800 x 600 display (the earlier standard)

Thank you Bob,

That is most kind of you to explain, I will certainly do that, but my next question is rather silly to someone with your experience.

It is:-  If I buy a flat screen with higher pixel resolution, will I be able to see detail on pictures more clearly?  I have an old type monitor like the old TV sets.

I am trying to justify the expense you see and I have bad eyes!

Hi Rabbit,

I know the feeling !!

At work I had two 17" CRT monitors and although the grafik card could handle 1280x1024 I found it was a strain to look at, so I changed the resolution to 1024x768 (see the link I gave above) and that was so much kinder for my eyes and easier to work with.

Last year I (finally) got two 19" LCD monitors, and because of the extra size I can now use the 1280x1024 resolution without problems.

But check the properties first, to see what your grafik card allows you.  If it's an older card, you may just end up having an 800x600 picture in the middle of your screen, with a big black border all round it Sad

Hi Bob,

Thanks for your help, I suppose I looked at the right website?  It was a bit over my head, which bit was I supposed to read?  So sorry to be so thick?

I do understand what you mean about the screens though, now all I have to do if find the grafik card.  To be honest I was going to ask Dell which size this existing computer will support, they have all the details and seem to be helpful, at least they were when I updated the working memory etc!

Hi Rabbit,

Sorry, I meant the RootsChat topic from which I quoted Smiley
There is also a screen shot of the properties menu there.
If you play around with changing the resolution, the existing grafik card will "tell" you which resolutions it can handle.
