Did John (Giovanni) Mazzei die in Southampton?
« on: Saturday 03 May 08 15:12 BST (UK) »

Hi,

I am attempting to find out if one of my ancestors died in Southampton or not.

His name was GIOVANNI MAZZEI, and he was born in a town called Pescaglia, in Lucca Province, Tuscany Italy on 1st August 1852.

He married in Nantes, France in 1881 to an Evarestine Marie Lemen, and they had 1 son, Andrew John Louis Mazzei (1887-1975) who was born in Havre, France in 1887.

In approximately 1891, Giovanni, Evarestine and Andrew moved to the UK, settling first in Blackpool, then London, where Evarestine died in 1912. On documents in this country, Giovanni is called John.

I have Andrew's naturalisation record from 1925, and it states that his mother is dead, and his father is alive and resides in Southampton.

I have searched St. Catherine's house index for years after 1925, but can't find a Mazzei (or variant spelling) dying in this country. In 1925, Giovanni (John) would have been 72 / 73.

Is there a chance that John may have died in Southampton, but St. Catherine's index has missed the entry?

How can I find if he did indeed die in Southampton, or how can I find if he left Britain after 1925?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Darin, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England.

It's possible that he Anglicized his surname - but to what?

You can search Southampton street directories online, by street or surname.  Cheesy

I've looked at Kelly's 1925 directory and I can't see him. Huh

Hi,

Thanks for the link.

I've had a browse of the directories, and can't seem to spot him.

I suppose if he was a lodger he wouldn't be listed.

Thanks,

Darin.

It might be worth writing to the local register office in Southampton and asking them to look.  It is possible that the entry never got to the GRO.   Might he have left a will?   That is another avenue to pursue.
