Help Needed - Canada to England
« on: Saturday 03 May 08 18:18 BST (UK) »

Hi All,

My grandfather was born in Canada in 1915, he joined the British merchant Navy in 1939 and married my grandmother (A British subject) in 1943. I am needing to find out when/how he became a British subject. I have a Britsh passport for him from the 70's and his service records which also say born canada but a british subject. I am hoping he stayed Canadian until after 1951? Any help about how to find out would be appreciated

Thanks

Paula

If he was born in Canada he would have been a British subject himself.
Canadian records are by Province- any idea where he lived in Canada?

Hi aghadowey,

Thanks for replying. My grandpa was from Halifax, NS. I am in regular contact with my family out there and he didnt have a birth certificate. Complicated story but in essance during WW1 two different government agencies each thought the other were keeping records so no one did. Through family history I have managed to get back quite a ways with this line. Since my earlier post I actually found out from an older relative that he was natauralised in the early 1970's in order to get a british passport so he could visit home, so now i just need to find out where these records are kept and how to go about gettin hold of them.

Any advice would be appreciated

If you post his full name and date of birth here we might be able to help.

Couldn't find him in lists of Merchant Seamen in National Archives but found a few other bits:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_subject
www.british-genealogy.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-10071.html
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070708214621AAqqMbW

There are/were lots of Clancys in Halifax County but that information is much easier to find.
