Hi again
I see John Gunning HERRON was a mariner.
In 1893 he is listed in Lyttelton Electorate (a good place to be if you're a mariner ) at Edmond Street - just listed as a labourer (as many mariners indeed were).
Do you know when he may have moved to the Woolston area ? (Just looking for clues on where to search next, for Jane).

Hi Keeweegal, Lu and Jean,
From the church register records at the Christchurch Library.
John Gunning HERRON married Jane MORROW, 18 March 1876 at The Manse, St Andrew’s Presbytarian Church, Christchurch. John was aged 34 and a cook. Jane aged 24. Witness was Mary Ann MORROW, Springfield Rd, Spinster. No other details.
I found babtisms for Jane Morrow HERRON and Lilian:
Jane Morrow HERRON, b.12 July 1883, baptised 11 Jan 1885 at St John’s Woolston. Paents John Gunning and Jane, residence Woolston, Labourer.
Lilian HERRON, b. 29 August 1884, bap. 14 Dec 1884, St John’s Woolston.
And Lilian’s burial: 4 April 1885, 6 months, Addington Cemetery.
No babtism for Esther Florence but her marriage:
Henry William McGregor FARROW m. Esher Florence HERRON, 3 May 1904, Church of the Epiphany, Hanmer Springs. Henry: 21 yrs, labourer, b. Sydenham. Parents: Abishai Pressney FARROW (!) and Margaret McGregor. Esther: 25 yrs, Household duties, b. Christchurch. Parents: John, gardener and Jane Morrow. Both residing at Hanmer Springs
Then these two children born to Jane Morrow HERRON:
William Percy HERRON, b. 21 Oct 1904, baptised 22 Nov 1904, Church of the Good Shepherd, Phillipstown. Parents: Jane Morrow HERRON, residence: The Refuge. Sponsors: Committee of St Saviours Guild.
Arthur HERRON, b. 10 Sept. 1907, baptised 24 Nov. 1907. Parents: Jane Morrow HERRON, Samaritan Home.
And William’s marriage... William Percy HERRON (Commonly known as SIMMONS) married Constance Evelyn Maud HOLDEM, 8 Sep. 1923, St Matthew’s, St Albans. William: 18 years, lineman, b. Linwood. Parents: Jane Morrow HERRON Constance: 20, b. Dannevirke. Parents: Joseph, farmer, Constance Eleanor DAWBER. Both residing at Kirwee. Marriage dissolved 30 August 1938
John Gunning HERRON: buried 26 Jan 1914. Aged 78. No next of kin or other details.
And this... Jane HERON, buried 10 Dec 1886, aged 39. Addington Cemetery. No other details.
The age is a bit out but could it be your Jane?
A few other Herron families around Christchurch at that time but couldn't find any other children born to John and Jane. I also checked under HERON. There were a couple of young children buried 1887 (7 years old) and 1881 (4 months), misspelt HEREN but changed to HERRON. But without parents names, it's hard to know who they belong to.
Hope some of this is useful.
Stephanie

Hi Stephanie
(Thanks .... but you really are being way too kind).
Yes, I did see that "Jane HERON" earlier, and discounted her at the time. BUT ... coupled with the other info you've uncovered, I think there is a real possibility it may be her.
Mmm ... John G. HERRON seems to have been a lot older - 34 in 1976 (b.c. 1842) ... 78 in 1914 (b.c. 1836)
There was no re-marriage ... just the one "Jane" appears on Marriage Index (Jane Morrow HERRON (the daughter) m. TAYLOR).
Another thing of interest is the death entry for "John Gunning HERRON" which shows - "no next-of-kin". Perhaps he was estranged from his children ? (Jane Morrow H. (dau) is living elsewhere in 1904 thru 1907 - though that may have been only a temporary arrangement) ? So yes, did Jane HERRON die when her children were quite young ?
Gosh, there's so much to speculate upon.

Rounding up ancestors can be hard work!!

Hello Kea, Stephanie and everyone else on this case, I knew some of that info, but 90% unknown, what a wonderful thing to do!! You are amazing, and I cannot thank you all enough!! .
I have most of the info on the Farrow side, but poor old Jane was hiding from me. I think perhaps that might have been Jane in Addington, but may never know for sure. I am a Christchurch girl, Addington to be exact, so when I am over there late this year I will have a nosy.
I am relatively new at Genealogy, but find it fascinating....THANK YOU ALL for your time and effort.
I hope I can help you all one day soon.
Keeweegal.
Hi Lucy2, just read your message, Know you have me wondering....

Nothing to suggest Arthur changed his name and I would think a Mr Simmons
might be a prime candidate for the father of William and maybe Arthur too.

Hi Keeweegal,
Am I reading this correctly, Jane Morrow Herron had two illegitimate children before marrying Charles Taylor?
It certainly looks that way. This is probably William's death in the Christchurch Cemetery Database ... William Percy SIMMONS, buried 1965, Sydenham Cemetery, aged 63, retired welder.
I agree with Mk2 that the father was probably a Mr Simmons!
You could order the death cert for Jane who died in 1886. That would confirm if she is yours.
Cheers, Stephanie
