George Augustus ANDERSON
« on: Sunday 04 May 08 03:47 BST (UK) »

George was the father of Emily Harriett Anderson who married Josa Da Silva in New Plymouth in 1901.

In the marriage notice published in the Taranaki Times George is noted as the late George Augustus Anderson of Gisborne.

A great granddaughter of Emily has suggested that George may have been from Sweden.

I have been unable to find out anything about George Agugustus Anderson.

Unfortunately the Gisbone newspapers are not searchable and we cannot locate any details of his arrival in New Zealand, his marital status or his place and date of death.

Any suggestions

Thanks for that Althea.
I got the name from papers Past wedding for Josa da Silva - emily's father.
He could have used his second name (anglisized)  - I will follow that up. and see if the is a death on the burial locator disc.

Many thanks for all your most valuable help - how do you find the time?

Augustus seems to be a very popular middle name for ANDERSON's makes you wonder whether many are related...many on all the CD's

PS. All my lines are brickwalls at present, so good to keep in touch looking for other folks

Thanks again - I have had a look at the various NZSG CDs I have and don't think they are helpful at this stage.

The 1871 birth would not be a direct connection as the daugher was married in 1901 - he would have had to father a child at age 10!!!

Once aghin - thanks, You aare right there are many brick walls to knock down in this fascinating time wasting hobby tracing family roots.

Have been trying out the many sites listed in Jo Henry's book - many have been closed down or are no longer accessible - pity, they sounded so interesting

Hi Althea - have now had a look through those records - also looked for Thomas Viner Crundwell (he died in a cart accident in Gisborne in 1878) - but one more wall we have climbed - many more to go yet.

Where do you get all these leads?

I have been in touch with a friend who was searching NZ for an Anderson himself a few years ago and we located him in the Te Kopuru cemetery, unfortunately he was dead.
I contacted him and he has just caught up with my e-mail and he said he is unable to help as the name is not among his Andersons however he suggested that.......
"Assuming that he came from Sweden you should be able to find him in the book written by Sten Aminoff: Svenskarna i Nya Zeeland.  Den svenska utvandringen till Nya Zeeland fram till 1940.  (Swedes in NZ,  the Swedish emigration to NZ until 1940)."

He doesn't have a copy but can get in touch with rel;ations in Sweden who do and they may be able to help.

Thanks for that -  I have copies of the Anderson pages of that publication (this was for  my mothers side of the family Wilhelm Frans Anderson) but there does not appear to be a reference to George Augustus Anderson (from my wife's family).

As I may have mentioned earlier - this was a rumour from one of my wife's cousins - she had no proof, but it is worth investigating.
