thomas alexander aitken
« on: Sunday 04 May 08 07:36 BST (UK) »

Hi there,

I am looking for a birth of Thomas Alexander Aitken in 1861.  I am not sure where in Scotland he was born though.  On his death notice in South Africa, it just lists "Scotland".  Other information I have on him, is that he married a Harriett, (unknown whether in South Africa or Scotland) and that he was a commercial bookeeper.  According to family, Alexander was a name that was carried down through the generations.

Can anyone help me out here?

Regards

Hi Jackie

I can see a possible family for your Thomas Alexander born in 1863 not 1861. I see from one of your posts on RootsWeb that Thomas Alexander and wife Harriet had a son in SA called Phillip Alexander Sutherland Aitken which adds to the probability that this may be his family.

There are a couple called THOMAS ALEXANDER AITKEN and JANE SUTHERLAND MURRAY (married on 27 JUN 1862  in Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanark) who had the following children (from IGI):

1. THOMAS ALEXANDER AITKEN  Born 08 APR 1863 Tradeston, Glasgow
2. HENRY JOHN MURRAY AITKEN Born 25 JAN 1865 Tradeston, Glasgow
3. ANNIE SUTHERLAND AITKEN Born 28 MAY 1866 Hutchesontown, Glasgow
4. CHARLES BRUCE AITKEN Born 15 JUN 1868 Middle Or New Parish, Greenock
5. ELEANOR ISABELLA AITKEN Born 21 AUG 1870 Middle Or New Parish, Greenock
6. MARY ANN AITKEN   Born 21 NOV 1872 Middle-East-West Parishes, Greenock, Renfrew
7. JAMES MCINTYRE AITKEN Born 08 MAY 1874 Middle Or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrew

There is a reference to the death of Annie on the BMD index of www.inverclyde.gov.uk

AITKEN   Annie Sutherland, daughter of Thomas Alexander Aitken, died at Greenbank Terrace, Greenock on 23rd Dec 1871 age 51/2 (Greenock Telegraph 25.12.18'71)

I'll have a look at the censuses for this family and post the details.

This looks like the family in 1871, from the index:

T A Aitkens 31, Manager Of Chemial Work, Falkirk, Stirlingshire
Jane Aitkens 29, b. Pt Glasgow, Renfrewshire
Thos A Aitkens    7, b. Glasgow
Annie S Aitkens 4, b. Glasgow
Charlatte (Charles?) Aitkens 2, b. Glasgow
Eleanor J Aitkens 8 Months, b. Greenock
George H Brna    14, nephew, b. Greenock
Mary McAllison    7, servant - probably age mis indexed!
Sarah Moffat    37, servant

Address: App Kelly St Ford Road 27, Greenock West, Renfrewshire

And in 1881:

Thos A Aitken    42, Secretary & Manager Of Oil Co Sim Of (as transcribed)
Jane S Aitken    39
Thos A Aitken    17
Charles B Aitken 12
Eleanor I Aitken 10
Mary A Aitken    8
James Mc I Aitken 6
Jane M Aitken    5, b. Greenock
William S Aitken 4, b. Greenock
George E Aitken 1, b. Hillhead
Margaret Aitken 2 Months, b. Hillhead
Sarah Black    19, servant
Catherine Leisk 21, servant
Margaret Murray 20, sister in law, Mantle Maker, b. Glasgow

Address:44 Hillhead Street, Partick Lanarkshire

1891:

Thomas A Aitken 52, Oil Chemist & Engineer
Jane S Aitken    50
Eleanor I Aitken 20
Mary A Aitken    18
Jane M Aitken    15
William S Aitken 13
George E Aitken 11
Margaret M Aitken 10

Address: 268 Bath St, Kelvin Glasgow

Can't easily see Thomas A. b. 1863 in 1891, nor parents/Thomas in 1901 which is promising!

I also cannot see a death entry for a Jane Murray/Aitken showing in Scotland post 1891.

The 1862 marriage cert would confirm parents for Thomas and Jane. From IGI these look good possibilities for their births:

THOMAS AITKEN  Christening on 09 MAY 1830 in Falkirk, Stirling, Scotland
Parents: WILLIAM AITKEN and HENRIETTA PETRIE

This is the closest I can see for Jane. A couple with these names also had a daughter Margaret in 1859 in Glasgow which would fit with the 1881 census entry:

JANE MURRAY  Birth on 22 MAY 1841 Middle Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland
Parents JOHN MURRAY and ANN SUTHERLAND

Their marriage cert. will enable you to verify their parents and with this confirmed, find them in the earlier censuses.

Regards.

Just thought to do a few more checks..... Roll Eyes

Thomas A Aitken, father died in 1893. This is from the Wills & Testament section of Scotlands People and is available to download:

Aitken   Thomas Alexander dated 20/09/1893 - occupation: sometime Chemist, Greenock, afterwards residing in Albion Crescent, Dowanhill, Partick near Glasgow, d. 06/06/1893 at Partick, intestate - recorded at Glasgow Sheriff Court Inventories - Ref SC36/48/142

His death cert will also be available to view on SP.

Jackie, hopefully from what you have on Thomas Alexander through family papers will let you verify you have the right family.

My g-g-grandmother was Margaret Aitken. born about 1867. Her parents were
Alexander Aitken and Mary Ann Aitken (McInntyre). I have them living in Paisley in 1865. Margaret Aitken married William Young in 1865 in Paisley and Alexander and Mary Ann are listed on the marriage record. Mary Ann was deceased at that time.
