Could anyone with access to Canadian databases please check for references to Silas Boam born Derby, England in 1846. I found a possible reference in the Ontario census 1871.

Shaun,

1901 and 1911 available free at http://automatedgenealogy.com/
1881 available free at www.familysearch.org

A quick search of 1901 Ontario didn't show anything promising, nor did 1881.

If I were you I would check with variant spellings.  Luck.

Thanks for that Nick. I can't see him in 1901 or 1911.

Need to check Ontario immigration records, marriages and deaths....an exact name search on one database service throws up a possible reference in each...

Annie,

That's my relative ! Thanks a lot. Now I wonder if he's the same Silas Boam who married Charlotte Priscilla Borland in Buffalo in 1879, and/or the one who became a doctor in Topeka City Kansas by 1885?

In the Canada death index:

Annie Boam, died Hamilton Wentworth
22 January 1870, 8 days after childbirth
Age 24, born England.

If this is Silas' Annie, he could then have remarried in Buffalo.

I bet that's the same one Val .... just the date that's different ... I'd say the later date is the date the death was registered ... wouldn't you ??  Undecided

Thanks for that Val!

I just found the grave in Topeka of Dr Silas A Boam and wife Charlotte P - but I'm wondering if this is indeed the Silas Boam that I am interested in. If so he would have gone from machinist in Canada in 1871 to medical man in Kansas in 1885. It's an unusual name, there are no overlaps, Silas seems to be gone from Ontario after 1871. I've put in a request for a look-up in the US "deceased doctors" book.

The Denver Evening Post, (Denver, CO) Tuesday, April 18, 1899; pg. 5; col B
Topeka, KS, April 18: Gertrude Boam, the 19-year-old daughter of Dr. A. S. Boam, of this city, took an overdose of strychnine this morning and died in a few minutes. She had been ill for some time, and her father had been giving her morphine to allay her pain. She had an attack this morning and took strychnine instead of morphine.

http://comres.tscpl.org/ - indexes the obituary of Dr Silas A. Boam  in 1916

In 1880, I think they are in Buffalo as Silas and Charlotte Boon, both born England, and he is still a machinist.

http://www.kshs.org/genealogists/individuals/physicians/index.htm
 - mentions him in 1887, 1893-1899.  Apparently full information from this source may give you info on number of years in practice and medical school attended, among other info.

Wow thanks Jorose. Lots of leads there.

This does look like the same man all the way through from Derby to Ontario to Buffalo to Topeka. It's all sequential, and he seems to have a unique name in his time.

I'm not having much luck finding the origins of Annie Church or Charlotte Priscilla Borland back in the UK, but that's for another day.
