Thanks Karen - hope to hear from you tomorrow!

Now here's a puzzle - just got this response to my request for a look-up in the Deceased American Doctors book:

""Boam, Silas A. Cause of death : heart disease
Death date : Nov 15, 1916
Place of death : Topeka, KS
Birth date : 1846
Type of practice : Allopath
States and years of licenses : KS, 1901
Places and dates of practices : Topeka, KS, 1870
Medical school(s) : The Medical School University of Birmingham, Birmingham, 1870, (G)
JAMA Citation : 67:1773""

Now, if he was in Ontario in 1868-1871 how could he have qualified in Birmingham in 1870?

What kind of doctor is an Allopath?

Did they have correspondence courses back then?

The definition of allopath appears a little complicated - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allopathic_medicine

I'm assuming Birmingham England, instead of Birmingham, Alabama right?  If the University of Birmingham still exists could you check to see if the had a Allopathic courses at that time?

An allopath is a standard medical doctor as opposed to practices like homeopathy and osteopathy.

It would be interesting  to find out how long the study for a medical doctor was in late 1860s.  Perhaps a request to U of Birmingham, Alabama would be fruitful.

Unless Silas had studied medicine in England and was simply working as a machinist while awaiting "qualification" to practice in US, timeline conflicts with known information.

I think that there is a real problem with the 1881 Buffalo census for "Silas Bonn" being your man.   Too many discrepancies with other information.

This is a truly interesting thread and I wish I had access to more resources to help solve.   At times it feels like 2 Silas Boams in parallel universes!

Just for a bit of useless information.....

The distance between Birmingham, Alabama and Topeka, Kansas is 815 miles or 13 hours in todays driving time.

Karen is right... Alabama school is known as "University of Alabama AT Birmingham.  My bad.

Updated:
I think we have to consider that 1870 graduation date may well be off.  There are 10 plus yrs unaccounted for when Silas may have traveled to England to obtain his MD.  Has anyone checked passenger lists from Canada to England and back?

Might they have archival records to research this?
http://www.medicine.bham.ac.uk/

Just a thought...He might have had the preliminary training before moving to Canada...but unable to practice in Canada. Maybe he then earned his final qualifications while still working in N.Y. ?

Another thought might be that he was book learned and pulled the wool over their eyes...as it has been done...

But I'm rooting for him just having lots of gumption and working his way there legitimately

I think I'd like to see what is recorded for him in US/Kansas medical directories in the 1880's and 1890's.

The University of Birmingham in England did not exist as such before 1900. The medical school there in 1870 was Queen's College. The Medical Faculty at the University of Alabama at Birmingham was created in 1969, but there was a Medical College in that Birmingham in the 19th century.

Now, on the trail of daughter Annie Gertrude Boam...the 1901 Canada census has an Annie Church age 32, single, living with sister-in-law Mary Dunlop, 28, and husband James A Dunlop and family. Racial origin recorded as Irish (but that's ditto'd down from James who was Irish).

There is a marriage in Carleton, Ont, 9 Jan 1894 between Mary Church and Jas Alexander Dunlop. Mary born Ottawa 1872, father John Church and mother Elizabeth Wilson.  Just a possibility !

For those not aware, the 1880 US census details (Silas and Charlotte Bonn in Buffalo, Erie County NY) and 1900 census image (Silas A Boam, Benjamin K Boam and Pearl M Boam, Topeka, Shawnee, KS) are viewable on http://search.labs.familysearch.org/.

John Church, age 22, born Ontario, Clerk
Charles Church, age 20, born Ontario, Clerk
Silas Boam, Age 22, born Ontario, W. Methodist, Machinist

On Silas and the 2 Church boys the marriage box is left blank.  They are all of "english" orgin.

Many thanks for that 1871 look-up Karen.  A bit more to go on!

The Methodist tag for Silas is jangling a bell with me - I've seen a Methodist reference somewhere else..was it just Eada Boam's obituary ??
