1901 census William T Gibbs
« on: Sunday 04 May 08 18:54 BST (UK) »

I am looking for information on William T Gibbs born 1875 in Canterbury Kent. On the 1891 census he is living with his parents William and Evelyn in Shirley,Croydon, but I would like to know if he married. Was he still with his parents in 1901?  I have struggled to find anything about any of this family. Can anyone help me please?
Regards

For some reason, only your ref nos came up on the screen when I sent my last reply, then the second part came up afterwards, so we crossed wires somehow.
This looks as though it may be him in High Wycombe. I will try and follow it up.
Thank you very much for your help

Hi
Thank you very much for that, I agree it does look like him, now I can start looking for a marriage in the next few years.
The Gibbs are a very illusive family, which couldn't be easy as there were 14 of them!!
I appreciate your help

This  is indeed an elusive family perhaps because they are linked to a famous British crime. William T Gibbs's sister Adeline Gibbs fled to America under an assumed name with the convicted killer John 'Babbacombe Lee' in 1911 . I am writing a book about the case and also have a keen interest in tracking the Gibbs family and am particularly researching the connection with Staffordshire- Adeline married a William Edward Jones in Lichfield in Nov 1910 - 3 months before flitting to America with John Lee. See the website of Ian Waugh.com on "The Man They Couldn't Hang" who comments on the Gibbs connection.

Sorry I have been so long replying but I haven't been on line for a while.

This is fantastic news that you have given me. My mother told me when I was very young that her Aunt had emigrated to America and used to send her presents when she was in an orphanage. I never knew the aunts name so I have been looking at each sister to find if she emigrated, but it has been difficult. A cousin told me that our great aunt had emigrated with a man convicted of murder, but who had been reprieved because the gallows failed to work. A friend enquired at Hull Jail and they said that was a story often told, but as I didn't know the name of the man , he was unable to help.

You have now unravelled the mystery for me.
I can't thank you enough.
I haven't looked at Ian Waugh's website yet, but I can't wait to see what it says!

Delighted to have helped . Do let me know anything you glean from your own end. Adeline was a mysterious and remarkable woman - she lived until the age of 94 - dying in 1969. Your news about parcels was interesting as I was sure she was still in communication with her family.  Ian Waugh and Mike Holgate wrote a book called The Man They Could Not Hang which mentions Adeline. Apparently there is a post card addressed to her from Lee in the Black Museum of Scotland Yard! The pub where she used to work The Old Kings Head on Borough High Street Southwark is still there.
I would be most interested in any photos of her relatives as i would like to imagine what she looked like

Hi Rod
I have looked at the Ian Waugh website and I am completely gobsmacked!! I was beginning to think all the stories had been make believe! I have ordered the book!!
The photo of the daughter Evelyn has a very strong resemblance to my own mother, who was the daughter of Adeline's sister Priscilla.
I am afraid there are no family photos I could pass on to you as Priscilla's home  was bombed during the war and all possessions lost.
I know my mother was never in touch with Adeline in later years, just when she was abandoned by her own mother and put in an orphanage when she was about 5 years old. I expect they lost touch when she was later adopted.
I have cousins who may have some photos, but I doubt it. I will try my best for you

Hi Rod
I don't know why this is in the 'completed look ups' as it is far from complete.
I have had time to look at some of the information on the Ian Waugh website.
Adeline Gibbs was born in Blean, Canterbury Kent in mar qtr 1977 which makes her birthdate on the Declaration of Intention false also. That would mean she was 92 when she died in 1969. But what's 2 years after the life she led???
She did name her daughter after her own mother, Evelyn.
My mother wasn't born until 1912, so Adeline must have been in touch with her family to start sending gifts and that must have gone on for a few years for my mother to remember them.
If there is anything I can help you with please let me know

Carole, it is in the completed section because it was a 1901 census lookup for William T GIBBS which was moved (by myself if I remember correctly) to completed when he was found Wink

If you wish, it can be moved back to one of the main boards

Thanks for that. I know William is complete (I think) but one thing seems to have led to another and I think I would like it back on the main thread if it isn't too much trouble.
