I have only just come across the Heaton Park prefab topic.
I remember as a young lad, about 1956 staying with my grandparents in one of the prefabs.
Would anyone remember my grandparents Jack and Nellie Tilley.
Regards
J.D.

Hooray, a Part Two to the thread! Welcome JD
What we need I think, is to wave frantically to Emmsthheight, who has the 1950s directory. I've sent her a message to that effect.
I too was a visiting grandchild, not a full time resident, so never knew any neighbours names.

hi
I've got my book but of course I don't know the names of the streets in Heaton Park prefabs!
I've looked up Tilley though and come up with three Johns. Not Jack, but John automatically became Jack in our family when you went to Lancashire, even though officially recorded as John.
See what you think!
Tilley, Jn, 151 Thompson Rd, 18 ,, , Jn E, 14 Richmond Rd East, 12 ,, , Jn W, 12 Pridmouth Rd 20, Didsbury 5692.
What do you think? I'm not sure which area it would be under.
If someone gives me some road names, I can give you some neighbours names.
Have a nice Bank Hol.
I'm off back in the sun, but I'll look again later.
Best wishes!

Cheers Emms! I don't know how to link the original thread to this one (there was an A-Z page there) but the street names were:
at the Bury Old Rd end Kirkmere Drive, Thirlmere Dr, Broadmere Dr, Whitemere Dr, Stanmere Dr
and at the Middleton Rd/Sheepfoot Lane end Glazebrook Ave, Perrivale Ave, Reedsham Ave, Thornham (I think) Ave, Buttermere Drive, Barnham Close, Wyndham Ave
I think this would be Manchester 8 or 9? 18 and 12 are Gorton and Longsight, further to the south.
Enjoy the sun! Barbara

Hi Emms
You are right his name was John, John Edward Tilley.
14 Richmond Road East is actually 14 Richmond Grove East this is were I was born 1947! How did you come across this address.
I think my grandparents may have moved to Heaton Park about 1960. John Tilley was my grans 2nd husband, married 1930, her 1st husband was my grandfather who she married 1919.
I am trying to locate his grave, I went to his funeral, I think I was about 10 at the time. I cannot remember the cemetery. I am sure it was up Oldham Rd towards Duckinfield.
Regards
J.D.

Could be Phillips Park or Gorton Cemetery? Gorton cemetery would be on the way to Dukinfield.
Manchester burial records website is down at the moment - we are in a Rootschat thread about that as well! When its working, you can find it here http://www.burialrecords.manchester.gov.uk/
And when its working it has generally been OK for finding names in Phillips Park and Gorton.

Hi Barbara
Thank you for the pm and also the list of streets.
I'll check them against the directory, and if anyone would like a look up leyt me know. By the way, it's listed by trades as well as surnames and street names, anbd some entries aren'ty in all of them. So if you knopw the trade or have an idea, give me that too.
By the way, it covers all of Manchester, Salford and Eccles.
Best wishes
Emms.

Hi JD
Thank you for the feed back. It makes it much more interesting doing lookups, and easier to help.
I'm glad I found an entry of interest although it doesn't actually answer your question!
I got the address from my 1953/34 Kelly's directory as decribed above. So actually it woukld be too early if they only moved there in the 1960's.
If I can look anything else up for you or anyone else do let me know.
Welcome to Rootschat!

Hi
Just a little PS!
I'll photograph the streets in Heaton Park prefabs you,ve given me, and if anyone would like a pm of a street, do let me know. PM me. It's actually easier by email if you're happy with that.
You can always have a spare address just for things like this, to protect your personal one, if you'd rather.
If anyone would like any look ups for anyone in the area at that date you're very welcome. Just post them. It's interesting for others to see and they may help too.
Be a bit careful though if you think the person may still be alive, then just pm me. You can always post a general question about the area/ trade/ church or records etc if you'd like input from other Rootschatters, too.
Best wishes to all.
Emms.

Hi all.
Thank you for the list of streets in the Prefabs.
I hate to tell you: Kelly's have completely ignored the prefabsa as far as I can see.
What a sell!
Well, Im sorry about the let down folks. It's a bit late to take it up with them 60 years on!
This a huge tome with over 2000 92 X 10" or so pages, so it's not just the biggest or most well known!
If anyone had a query about else where feel free to ask - start a separate topic, though.
best wishes
Emms

It's a bit late to take it up with them 60 years on! Oh I don't know.. just to be awkward!
I wonder - if the prefabs were council housing, and temporary at that, the directories might not have bothered with them as the occupants were 'only' tenants passing through. Grr!

Hi
The only other thing I can think of is that many streets changed their names. I won't have any info on events after 1953, and I suspect some of thos aremissing.
Good hunting!

Hi to all you Prefabers, I too visited my relations on one of the estates, but have no record of which one. Their names were Eddie and May Doran. I found this topic whilst searching for an address for my Father in 1931. It was stated as 9, Eighth Avenue, Heaton Park. On searching the Electoral Register, I found it listed as Heaton Park, Eighth Ave. I cannot find where this was. Any clues ?? Also some Prefabs of this type still exist in Altrincham, on Ellesmere Road and Urban Road. These have been modernized and reclad in brick. Regards to all Mike

Welcome to the thread Mike! This is the second Heaton Park Prefabs thread, if you look for the other one here on the Lancashire board (it has slipped down to page 2 now, last posting was on April 13), you will find an A-Z page showing the prefab streets in the late 1950s that Bill aka 'MrBothered' very kindly posted. I can't see an Eigth Avenue on there, can anyone else?
The prefabs, as I understand, were not built until the mid to late 1940s, so I think Eighth Avenue must have been somewhiere else in or around Heaton Park.
Maps out, rootschatters! Who can find Eighth Avenue first?

I used to live in Trafford Park and I think there was an Eighth Avenue there. I lived in Second Avenue. Don't know if this is of any help.
