A new avenue has now opened up for me in my latest hunt but I need some help!
The rumour is that the couple in question married in about 1910 and they had a child in 1914.
The next info is that he had taken up with a widow and moved county in about 1925. He changed his name very slightly by adding a couple of letters. This new couple then went on to have 3 children but I can find no record of them ever marrying although they did live as man and wife.
I am trying to see if I can find what happened to the first wife and child. Is there a way I could find if they divorced, if she re-married ie a bigamist or could she declare that he had abandonded her and so return to her maiden name?
My initial idea was that he just up and left therefore being unable to marry again but it would be nice to know for his son.
If anyone has any ideas they'd be greatly received, as usual.
However, it sounds like they probably did not divorce. There was a rule by which it was permitted to remarry after seven years (if there had been no word for her husband in that time).
If in England, you could check forward from 1914 quarter-by-quarter for marriages and deaths under both her married and maiden names, and for the child born 1914 under both surnames as well. The timing makes me wonder if something happened during WWI... do you know what was going on with him between 1914 and 1925?
I can speak for what I've found in my family. My gr grandfather had abonded my gr grandmother. There was never a divorce and she never re-married. This took place c1922. My gr grandmother tried to get a pension, but because she couldn't prove he was dead, she wasn't able to get one.
We found out about 10 years that my gr grandfather had returned to England and lived like man and wife with another woman and had 4 more children. I have never been able to find the second marriage certificate.
He had done the name change thing as well, but when they first came to Canada, he had changed it, and we still go by that last name. When he abondoned my gr grandmother and went back to England, he changed it back to the original name and his second family all use that surname.

Who all came to Canada in a little row boat, clap clap, clap your hands!!
It would appear that this happened in Leicestershire and Suffolk just after WW1. I've tried A2A on Joroses's advice but there is no trace in there so supposedly it's as I suspected that it was an abandonment. I had already started to look through the registered but wasn't looking forward to the thought of 80+ years!
So far I have no idea on the original daughter's history but will keep looking.
