James Chance was in 65th Regiment, how would I find which battalion? 2 of his son-in-laws were in 14th regiment, but only 2nd battalion went to NZ.

ALERT : There has been discussion about this on another thread - which for some reason, "Freckle" has elected to abruptly curtail ?
In order to avoid duplication of effort, perhaps "Freckle" could add in here, the link to this previous thread ?

Yes, but it's preferable to type in the actual link reference here, so that it is able to be "clicked upon".
(The previous thread which has now become redundant, will, without further postings to it, move down the board as new queries are added. That means the "BDM disc NZ" thread will be difficult to find unless a specific search is made for it !)

An outline,
Well, the brickwall is the whole family. lol I have found NZ baptisms for Richard 1855, Julia 1857, James 1860 and William Laurence 1863. Father James Chance 65th regiment, mother Elizabeth. I have a ggrandmother Mary Chance c 1847 Wellington, who married Andrew Robertson 14th regiment in 1864 in NZ. On Marys NSW death cert. is says father James- a soldier , mother -Fitzsimmons. Marys Permission to Marry only gives father James. Found him (with lots of help from chatters) he was born Kells Meath Ireland. When James snr enlisted he had his mother Nellie as NOK, she lived in Newtown Wellington. I have found a Julia Chance marrying John Moxham in 1882. I have sent letters to the few people researching Julia, but have had no replies. Marys death cert. also states she spent 5 years in Tasmania, but I can find nothing there either. I did find James Chance -a founder of Wellington Tce in the business directory 1886/87 and John Chance-a labourer. Once they hit the Shoalhaven area in NSW about 1869 they are well documented. The 65th reg. did spend time in Tassie, that could explain the gap between Mary and the next child. I have checked passenger lists in and out of NZ , but they are rather vague details. That, I'm sad to say, is all I know about that side of the family. I did find a death in NSW of James Chance ,father James , mother not noted ,in 1884. As well as a few other possibles. Another chatter checked with NZ Genealogical Society and there was ony one James Chance listed during the Land Wars. I did also find John Chance buried Karori Cemetery 27 Feb 1909 age 56 gives him c 1853. So...I haven't been lax, am only a newbie at 20 months, so, just not sure where to go from here, without wasting $$$ and being nowhere further ahead. Hope I haven't totally confused anyone. I'm really good at that. Any assistance greatly appreciated and most welcome. Cheers Freckle

and a little more,
Hi Freckle
I now have some information for James CHANCE (from the H. Hughes book). This is from the same index listing which the other Rootschatter gave you; however to interpret the index reference, you need to refer to a couple of "keys" which are published at the end of the book. So the following is the "interpreted" version :
65TH REGIMENT
A. Regimental Number - 1296
B. Rank (at discharge) - Private
C. Surname - CHANCE
D. Christian Name/s - James
E. Birthplace - Kells, Meath
F. Trade or occupation on enlistment - Labourer
G. Date of Enlistment - 2 April 1838 (020438) (refers to soldier's entry into the army, not necessarily to the regiment in which they served in NZ).
H. Place of Discharge - Wellington (NZ)
I. Date of Discharge - 1 June 1859 (010659)
J. P = discharged to Pension
K. Ship - (RP) = "Sir Robert Peel" Sailed from Gravesend (UK) on or about 15/9/1846 Arrived at Auckland (NZ) on or about 4/1/1847 : -------------------
If you do a "google" search for "65th Regiment in NZ" you'll find there is quite a lot of other helpful info available.
Further details of the Regiment in NZ are available on microfilm and (as they form part of a joint copying venture), will be available at major repositories in Australia.
