Wellington Archives look-up please
« on: Monday 05 May 08 08:33 BST (UK) »

Could I ask someone to look up (or at) a couple of archives for me.Both are regarding James Farrell who came to NZ from Ireland on the Rob Roy with his wife and 3 children.I am hoping to find the names of any children born in NZ and where in Ireland he was born.

The first is a probate dated 1890
Agency AAOM
Series 6029
Record 3542

The second refers to his Naval-Miltary Land claim
Farrell,James - H M 8th regiment-Hamilton or KihiKihi (no date)
Agency LS
Series 69
Box/item 11
Record 642
For this one I would really like advice on whether it would be worthwhile obtaining a copy and what kind of information it contains- I have never requested anything from the Archives before.
Thanks Smiley

Hi Barbara

James FARRELL probate:
Very disappointing – only 2 short legal documents.
Died 21 Sep 1890 @ Carterton.
Intestate, Public Trust administered.
Described as a Livery Stable Keeper.
Under ₤400

James FARRELL land claim.
Several promising documents...
Letter by him dated 1897 states that he landed at Auckland on the Rob Roy in 1860, so it sounds like it is your man.
(So the probate isn't him).

His record states that he was born in the Parish of "Kilmore or Kenagh(?)" in the County of Tipperary.

If you PM me your email address, I will send you photos of all the documents.

Hi Barbara

The more I look at that Army document, I think the 2nd place is Nenagh (my 2xgrt grandmother is from there), but I can't find a Kilmore near it.
But given the fact that it says Kilmore or Nenagh, maybe it is only a cluster of houses.

So we still don't know when or where James died, but it was after Sep 1897.....

Thanks a million, Bren
I am completely ignorant when it comes to Ireland.I was thinking that James might have died before 1900 because there is another James Farrell who gave Mrs B Farrell of KihiKihi as next of kin when he served in the Boer War,which I think will be the first James' wife Bridget .If his father was alive, surely he would have given his name Huh.
If that James was a son,he must have been born in NZ - might have to get a birth certificate.
There can't have been too many James Farrells in such a small place, can there Huh especially with reference to the Rob Roy.
Thankyou again

Hi Barbara,

When my grandfather went to the Boer War, he listed his mother as next of kin, even though his father was still alive....

Do you have a copy of the Army record for the son?

No, I don't have a copy - I saw him on the Cenotaph website.would there be more detail somewhere else?
Thankyou for the other two pictures, they have just come through,so I'll have a good look tomorrow.
I'm really grateful for those pictures, much better than a photocopy, which is what I would have got had I applied straight to the Archives  Smiley Smiley Smiley
Many thanks

Hi Barbara

Yes I have some photocopies from Archives (pre digital camera days) and they aren't very good.  Also you don't have the opportunity to "manipulate" the image.

Boer War & WW1 records are at Archives where you found the probate and Land Claim:
http://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/

Was his service number SA2716?
His enlistment form will give you a wealth of information.

Have a look there for other members of the family, or just try FARRELL and see what comes up, as you may see family names that are familiar.

Thanks Bren
I will certainly look into that then.Yes, his service number was 2716 Grin
Thank you also for the larger images of the service record for James snr. I have only had a quick look so far ,but I can already make out a lot more than before.Just the place and date of enlistment are a puzzle. It looks like Ballarat & 1858,which doesn't tie in with discharge from his British Regiment in 1859 Huh But I am sure that is just my mistake - haven't had a really good look.It probably doesn't say anything like that.
How exciting Grin Grin Grin

Hi Barbara

I thought the enlistment place was something like "Butterworth".
The date was definitely 16 Feb 1858.

I would check out the 2nd Battalion 8th Foot to see where they were based as that might narrow down the search....
